Default 2 Weeks Ago ...... Compared to Today

o

Right now, we're all upset because of numerous missed opportunities in today's heart-breaking loss to the Eagles.

1) l McLaughlin's missed 50-yard field goal attempt, which sailed just a bit wide to the right.

2) l The Colts' failure to essentially end the game when they had to settle for a field goal instead of a touchdown when they had the ball 1st-and-goal from the Eagles' 5 yardline late in the 4th quarter.

However, just 2 weeks ago ......

1) l The Eagles were undefeated at 8-0, and some were even wondering if they had a shot to equal the Miami Dolphins' undefeated 1972 season.

2) l The Colts had just gotten absolutely steam-rolled by the Patriots, looking even worse than they did in their 24-0 shutout loss to the Jaguars in Week 2.

So ..... 5 minutes after that absolute disaster against the Patriots, coupled with the fact that the Eagles had a record of 8-0 at the time, most people probably would have suggested that you were living in some sort of alternate universe if you had predicted that the Colts would be leading the Eagles by a score of 13-3 at the start of the 4th quarter, and that the Eagles would need a late rally to barely pull one out of the fire for a thrilling, nail-biting 17-16 win.

Subsequently, I'm not so certain that a complete explanation of the Colts' current situation is that they simply got a temporary shot of adrenaline from their new head in their win over a below-average Raiders team last week ...... before today's game, many Colts fans were stating that even a close loss to the Eagles would be a good sign for the team going forward, if not necessarily this season then in 2023 and beyond. In fact, this was the second consecutive solid game for the offensive line, in a season in which good games from them have been rare (they've only had 3 solid games overall.)

Any loss sucks, whether it's a manhandling by the Patriots or a heart-breaker against the Eagles ...... but I wouldn't necessarily paint today's failure to secure the win when they had several chances to do so with the same broad brush that had the Colts looking like one of the worst teams in the NFL only 2 weeks ago.

Under four yards a carry on the ground and 4 sacks allowed. In no reality was that a “solid game” for the offensive line.

Omaha said it best, it’s slightly better without Pryor but it’s still really bad.

It’s the story of the entire season.

One of the sacks was Ryan taking one intentionally on 3rd down and goal to keep the clock running, instead of throwing an incomplete pass ...... the Colts were in chip-shot field goal range either way, so Ryan did the right thing back sitting down in-bounds to make the Eagles use one of their time-outs instead of throwing it out of bounds and stopping the clock.

Also, of the other 3 sacks, at least 2 of them were coverage sacks, not necessarily the fault of the offensive line. In fact, on none of the other 3 sacks did we see what we have been seeing most of the season, which is having defensive linemen/linebackers in the quarterback's face less than 2 seconds after the ball is snapped. Although, they were there pretty quick on the final sack (about 3 or 4 seconds after the ball was snapped) at the end of the game.

My eyes saw a solid game from them today, much closer to the 2 in which they had against the Jaguars in Week 6 and against the Raiders in Week 10 than the 8 awful ones that they had for most of the rest of this season.

We were a crappy team 2 weeks ago and still are a crappy team. We are playing better now but that is faint praise. We are going nowhere with these qb's or this pass rush.

I think Saturday has given the team life, and it will help with the team culture. That is what Frank had lost. If Saturday can keep their heads up, plugging in the right couple of players next year should be the key to getting back to contender status. I’m talking QB and pass rusher. The line can protect a mobile quarterback, if that quarterback also has the ability to make plays with his arm.

The Colts were competitive the entire game. I would prefer more aggressive play calling on offense. What is there to lose?

I think I understand what you're saying. Just watching the game, it didn't feel like Ryan was constantly in a collapsing pocket, constantly under duress, etc. Compared to earlier games like 1st JAX, KC, DEN... those games felt like every-single-play was a free runner straight up Ryan's ass.

It's an improvement over the catastrophe that it was, but still not good. And the run blocking is still not there. The Eagles were giving up around 145yds/gm their previous 5 games. After the first drive, I thought we'd top that easily. But we completely stalled out again.

You saw what you wanted to see. I saw a line that’s marginally better since Pryor is out but still bad. Can’t run block or pass block.

Coupled with a noodle armed statue for a quarterback, it’s a disaster.
