They lost by a score of 24-16, and they were actually leading by a score of 13-10 late in the 3rd quarter. It's hard to imagine Manning begging out of that game, under those circumstances.

Also, the Colts had not lost the previous 3 meetings with the Patriots prior to that late-season win, as the article asserts. The teams split 2 very close games in both regular season contests in 1999 (the previous season.)

Another possibility would be the 1998 season. The Colts WERE blown out by the Patriots early that season, by a score of 29-6. But they did not win the rematch, as Arians/the article asserts ...... although the game was much closer than the blowout game from earlier that season, and Manning played well, according to his stats for said game.

I'm not saying that the incident didn't happen the way Arians claims, but his memory on some of the details is sketchy. If I had to guess, I would think that he was talking about Manning's rookie season in 1998, and simply forgot that the Colts did not win the rematch later in that season, but rather lost a much closer and much more competitive game.

Default Blending '98 and '99

I think Arians is blending '98 and '99 with the 2 stories. The first being Manning's first start vs. the Cheats and the 2nd being the 2nd game against them in '99 which we won.
