A lot of people are going to wail and moan about his performance, yesterday. They’ll spout all kinds of nonsense about how he’s regressing to the mean that we saw in New York.
I would say b******it, but I’m not allowed to use that kind of language here. So, I’ll say stierscheisse and hope that the moderators don’t have a German to English dictionary. I won’t try to argue that Jones had a great day, but they put up 31 points even though they left 10 on the field through missed kicks and coaching decisions to pass up chip shot Field Goals. For much of the game, they moved the ball easily, racking up the better part of 600 yards in total Offense. Jones completed 19 of 26 passes, a 73% completion percentage, for 255 yards. Granted, there were mistakes. But, on his 26 passes, he was pressured 14 times, with 7 sacks and God only knows how many hits. More than one Quarterback, safely memorialized in bronze and ensconced in Canton, would have crawled into a shell and cried mama…I’m looking at you, Tom Brady. He was literally bloodied but unbowed. Instead of carping on the negative and dwelling on the issues we saw, the coaches need to spend a lot of time over the next 13 days figuring out how to tighten up the blocking. They might also build in a few hot reads, because I didn’t see many opportunities for Jones to dump the ball off when confronted with a free blitzer. |

I am concerned about Jones. Not the sacks. Ive heard people who seem to know think he may have been 'drifting' instead of pushing forward in the pocket. End up setting up 11 yard back. Supposedly gives the defensive ends an edge with a more favorable angle. Seems like that will be fixed if it is the issue. My concern are the fumbles. People say that the defense made great plays, and they may have. Defenses make great plays all the time in the NFL but 5 fumbles in two games is an inordinate amount. And it isn't like people can say he has had 6 years of NFL experience and didn't fumble before. Dude has 58 fumbles in his first 80 games played. Manning had 75 in 266 games, Luck-who was crazy reckless-had 44 in 86 games. It is a concern if your franchise QB has ball security issues.
I would like to add that I totally appreciate that this is the kind of shit I get to bitch about. I am beyond happy with this team. Last edited by Oldcolt; 11-10-2025 at 07:02 PM. |

Spot on. I mentioned this in the "Good time for the bye" thread.
With regards to the pass protection. Yes, the O-line has regressed in pass protection...in particular Braden Smith. But, that is not the whole story. It's not like Daniel Jones was besieged by an early pass rush. In fact that was rarely the case. I can place equal blame on DJ as well as play calling. Maybe DJ needs more freedom at the line to check to whatever he wants. Because there wer obvious blitz situations where we just were not prepared. Yes, this an excellent time for the bye for the Colts. Some self-scouting needs to be done to break tendencies. I also believe that more bootlegs for DJ would be beneficial. DJ has got to stop drifting back in the pocket though, because he's turning 5 yd sacks into 10 yd sacks.

I don’t think Jones will consistently be as good long term as he showed the first half of the season. That’s less of a knock on him though and more of a testament to how great he’s played. And while the OL and Steichen have been problems the last two games, Jones has a ball security / pocket awareness issue as well. I think you can acknowledge that while still recognizing how well he has played. I sure hope he and the team admit it and work to correct it (along with pass protection) because besides that, I think he’s good enough to win a SB with even with some drop in performance. Those fumbles can change a game quickly though and he has to protect the ball better for the team to hit its ceiling.

Since Andrew Luck cashed out suddenly, the Colts have tried several QBs, all of which were not the answer. Most were well past their glory days. Jones is certainly the best option we've had since Luck, but that doesn't mean he's all that. To me, he's middle of the pack talent wise, but with this team, that just might be enough. Regardless of how well he plays this year, if I were Ballard, I wouldn't do a long term contract with him just yet. I'd franchise him and make him have a second good year before giving him anything long term.

If he stays healthy, plays reasonably well in the 2nd half of the season with these tough D's we will be playing, leads us to the PO's and plays well in the PO's, if all that plays out, I have no issue at all signing him to a monster long term deal. |
