In 1963, Paul Horning of the Packers and Alex Karras of the Lions each lost one full season of the prime of their playing careers due to betting on NFL games ...... they did not bet against their own teams, but the fact that they were betting at all (while simultaneously playing in the same league in which they were betting on) compromised the integrity of the game at-large, hence their suspensions.

Hornung and Karras were actually quite fortunate that commissioner Pete Rozelle allowed them back into the league after their one-year suspensions ........ now, more than 5 decades later, Josh Shaw of the Arizona Cardinals has either failed to learn from Hornung's and Karras' mistakes, or he never knew about them in the first place. Whatever the reason(s), Shaw will be suspended for a minimum of the remainder of the 2019 season and all of the 2020 season, and he will then have to wait and see if he pays any higher of a price than that. Keep in mind that the NFL Players' Union is not nearly as strong as is the Major League Baseball Players' Union, so whatever decisions that commissioner Roger Goodell makes in regard to additional punishment for Shaw beyond being suspended for the remainder of the 2019 and 2020 seasons will likely be difficult to successfully contest and have overturned.
