Newbie....I dont know sh*t about investing, but im eager to learn.

Im thinking about putting up at least 5,000 dollars by July in stocks, Cds , or whatever to see if i can get some good returns.

Im thinking more intermediate term like 2 to 5 as far as collecting on dividends/interest, and even long term investing like 10+ years.

Any tips to get started?

How long til retirement? Mutual funds are the best bet, but choosing one depends on the answer to that question.

Goals for your money, in order:

1. Get a little emergency fund of $1,000.
2. Cut up the credit cards and get out of ALL debt except for the mortgage.
3. Bulk up the emergency fund to 3-6 months of your monthly expenses.
4. Start putting 15% of gross income in retirement vehicles.
5. Put money away for kids college.
6. Pay off your house early.
7. Accumlate vast wealth through "time in the market" instead of "timing the market".

Where are you in the process?

That is great advice for him to follow ...
With #4 I don't know your employment situation, but if a 401K plan is available most offer a % match. For example if you put in 6% your employer will match up to a pre-set percentage. ALWAYS put in at least what your company will match ...

For retirement, priority should be:

1. Roth 401k with match (match will not be Roth).
2. Traditional 401k with match.
3. Roth IRA.
4. Roth 401k without match.
5. Traditional IRA.
6. Traditional 401k without match.
7. Variable annuity.
8. Taxable investment account.

Always growth stock mutual funds with long, good track records split evening between large cap, mid cap, small cap and international.

After getting out of debt and get your full emergency fund, you do steps 4, 5, and 6 at the same time. Once you own your home, so many life choices open up.

I've always had an emergency fund going back to my early working days and in college, so thats scratched off the list.

Right now im trying to bang away at my student loans.

Honestly, I dont have any kids yet so im not really worried about college funds right now.

Im mostly interested in trying to invest money in stocks and mutual funds and build up my savings account.

Pointers on how to read the markets?

Beginner/ safe stocks I should be looking at?

Im really dead set at getting the ball rolling this Summer with investing.

I'll try to see if I can meet up with a financial adviser at my bank next month before I make any moves.

No reading the market.

Dollar Cost Average (DCA) into the market (invest the same amount every month regardless of if the market is up or down. When up, you buy less shares and you buy more shares when itis down or "on sale.") and let your investments without rebalancing.

Guy I listen to says no single stocks until you have more than $1m invested; the risk is too high. Good growth stock mutual funds with long track records.

If you want the math and history, find a copy of "Stocks for the Long Run" by Jeremy Siegel. Talks about how the market as a whole has never failed to be up over any 8 year timespan since the late 1600s in England and then the U.S. regardless of Civil War, World War, Great Depression or anything inbetween.

Also, no bank investment advisor; those guys are barely trained.

I have some advice on that if you want to PM me

Mrs Puck and I were in talks with a friend who is already a hydroponics grower. He was working on setting up in Michigan. Ohio is now available with much easier rules. Indiana will more than likely be legal for medical in 2019. Lots of hoops and whistles but the return is tremendous

Sadly my friend died Tuesday morning of a heart attach cause from a blood clot because he had to be taken off blood thinners to have a colonoscopy preformed last Wed. He was my league golf partner and a very good guy and a Ft Wayne fireman... his funeral is tomorow

Anyway. If you investigate the numbers you will see that what I am saying is true. We are still investingating just a huge setback and loss of a very good friend
