We made it to The Super Bowl, and we let The Saints outplay us........... Napping in the onside kick, Reggie Wayne not running a sharper pattern, Pierre Garcon dropping what likely would have been a touchdown, overly conservative play-calling on 3rd and 1 from our own ten yardline with a minute to go in the half (I liked the first two running plays on 1st and 2nd downs, which netted 9 yards, and set us up for a 3rd and one....... I just think that we could have called a lob-pass and/or a Manning bootleg to get that first down, when everyone in the stadium was waiting for Manning to handoff to the running back). We'll see what happens. There really isn't a lot to criticize, other than some lack of aggressiveness in their play and in their play-calling in the World Championship Game against The Saints yesterday. |

1. Internal roster fixes. Cut Hank Baskett, especially with Gonzo coming back. Taj Smith can do Hank Baskett's job if need be. Decide who the kicker is going to be for next year or if he's even on the roster. Etc.
2. Find a goddamn kick returner. Chad Simpson is not a kick returner. I realize the Colts' return units will make most guys look bad, but Simpson does a damn fine job looking bad on his own. Find someone who at least runs faster than Simpson, or doesn't come to complete stops at the 10-yard line. Ditto replacing TJ Rushing as a punt returner if possible. 3. Pass rush. Freeney can't be the sole catalyst, and at the very least you have to start finding someone to take over his role in the future if the defense stays on the same course it's on. Mathis is nothing without Freeney. Find someone either in the draft or FA that can generate a rush. Priority goes to those who can generate a rush up the middle, pushing the OL back and negating a quick drop by the QB. But if there's a good edge rusher, you certainly consider him too. Basically, I'm saying DT then DE. Muir and Johnson are solid anchors, but the next time they push the pocket back will be the first. 4. OL. Start with OTs. The Colts were lucky to get by with what they had this year. Charlie Johnson is all effort, but hardly an ideal starter. Ryan Diem sucks - mediocre pass-blocker and abysmal run-blocker. At least one of these guys needs to be replaced, and soon. Then you look at the interior line. I think Ryan Lilja's alright, but you have two question marks beside him. Jeff Saturday's replacement needs to be unearthed or named, if not this year then very soon. I don't know if that's Richard or Pollak or someone not on the roster, but that's something that needs to be addressed before Jeff hangs 'em up and the Colts have nothing at the position. Finally, Kyle DeVan is better than Pollak, but that's not saying much. If this position can be upgraded, it needs to be. 5. LB. It helps that Tyjuan Hagler is coming back next year, but this team needs to acquire a starting-caliber LB. Brackett is a FA, and I think the Colts will re-sign him but still they need to look into finding his eventual replacement (Brandon Spikes?) At OLB, I think the Colts can get by with Session and Hagler, but if either gets hurt, the Colts are screwed...Wheeler sucks. So it would be nice to pick up an OLB with future starting potential. Or maybe even an OLB that's just an upgrade over Session or Hagler. My first five steps, anyway.

Bob Sanders needs to go, then Indy needs to decided whether or not they want Bullitt starting.
Viniatieri and Stover need to go. Indy has to find a way to run next year with so many top picks invested in running backs. |

I've pretty much ignored all the discussions about Sanders and his contract and the salary cap hits if he stays vs if he goes.
Can someone please recap the Sanders debaucle. |

Bob Sanders' career games played:
![]() Out of 96 regular season games, Sanders has played in 47 and missed a whopping 49. Appalling. |

1. Find a way to run the ball effectively and run it more often. You've got a nice stable of backs so use them for something other than pass blockers.
2. Find an interior pass rusher. Either via the draft with a guy like Odrick or via free agency (although, Polian is less apt to do something here). 3. Draft a real LT. Charlie Johnson plays hard and does a solid job in pass protection but he's not the answer. He may be a nice RT and probably an upgrade over Diem but that's not saying much. 4. Shore up the secondary. Lacey and Powers were rookies and should improve and Hayden can be a good player but struggled at times this year. However, there isn't much else behind those three at corner. Bob Sanders is a question mark at safety because he can't stay healthy and they will probably want to re-sign Bethea. 5. Wheeler blows and hopefully getting Hagler back will help. |
