Default John Havlicek Died

o

John Havlicek, the legendary swing-man guard/forward who won 8 World Championships with the Boston Celtics, has died.

Havlicek played 16 seasons for the Celtics. He came into the league as a rookie in the 1962-63 season as a teammate of Bill Russell, Sam Jones, KC Jones, and Bob Cousy, and he went out in the 1977-78 season as a teammate of Dave Cowens, Jo Jo White, and Cedric "Cornbread" Maxwell.

One of the most famous moments of his career has been immortalized when broadcaster Johnny Most screamed "Havlicek stole the ball !!! Johnny Havlicek stole the ball !!!" when he preserved a win over Wilt Chamberlain's Philadelphia 76ers in the waning seconds of Game 7 of the 1965 Eastern Conference Finals by intercepting Hal Greer's inbounds pass to Chet Walker, with the Celtics desperately clinging to a one-point lead.

Aside from his incredible talent as a basketball player, Havlicek was always one of the best (if not THE best) conditioned athletes on the court, as he had a resting heart rate of 41 ........ that is as good as many competitive long-distance runners.

Known affectionately by teammates as "Hondo", Havlicek had both his #17 retired by the Celtics and his #5 retired by Ohio State University, where he starred prior to entering the NBA. He, along with Jerry Lucas, led the Buckeyes to their only National Championship in school history in the 1959-60 season.

Havlicek was 79 years-old.
