(vs. BILLS, 11/10) Considering the fact that 10 of the Bills' 30 points were due to a pick-6 by Joe Flacco at the beginning of the game and by Shane Steichen's inexplicable time-out call in the final seconds of the first half which resulted in the Bills tacking on 3 points on the final play, I thought that the Colts' defense wasn't that bad today. There were times when they were porous and vulnerable, and allowed the Bills to convert on 3rd-and-long and 2nd-and-long. There were 33 seconds left to play in the 2nd quarter. It was 3rd and 2, not 3rd and 20. Even if the Bills had not made the 1st down, the 3rd-down play would have taken at least 5 seconds, and then they would have punted the ball ...... and after the punt and its hang-time, the Colts would have had the ball at about their own 25 or 30 yardline with about 8 or 9 seconds left to play, and no time-outs left. That time-out was inexplicable and inexcusable, unless Steichen thought that there was a really good chance that the Colts' return-man was going to run the ball all the way back for a touchdown on the punt. The situation was not at all comparable to going for it on 4th-and short. o

I don't think it changes the calculus too much, because he would've called the TO anyway... but they reset the clock to 0:37 when Steichen made the call.
If they get the stop, we're looking at 30-32 seconds, minus a 7-8 second punt, leaves us with 22-25 seconds at our own 25. That's not counting the punt return which is another variable that's part of the calculus. There was a different, but similar situation against Miami. 3rd & 3 with 1:21 left, long FG range, they call TO. Dolphins pick up the first and start using their TO's. As it happened, they got it down to 0:22 and took a 10-0 lead. After the touchback, Pittman caught a 33-yarder and we got a field goal, it was significant, and we celebrated. That's why I bring up Reich. During his tenure, he always went for it on 4th and guys always screamed about it. When it worked, he was "ballsy." |

No, that was completely different. We called a timeout with 1:21 left in the Miami game, not 33 seconds. The fact that we got a field goal in the waning seconds of the first half WAS NOT a direct result of us calling the timeout that we called almost a full minute earlier, but because of the fact that Miami acted even more retarded than the Colts ever did by allowing a receiver to get behind them in that situation AND allowed him to get out of bounds in the process. A) Your alluding to what happened in the Dolphins game is similar to saying Hail-Mary worked once, that there is a good chance that it would work again. B) More significantly, the timeout that we called today (33 seconds) was nowhere near similar to the timeout that we called against Miami (1:21), and I explained why above. C) It's extremely unlikely that the Bills would not have played the final seconds of the second half stupidly as the Dolphins did, especially since there there would have been even less time (15 seconds, at most) left to play when the Colts got the ball back. Not only are you probably the only Colts fan who think that there was a realistic chance that we could have gotten the ball back and put points on the board before the clock ran out by calling that timeout with 33 seconds left on 3rd down and 2, I suspect that you are the only football fan period who actually believes that (Colts fans and otherwise.) o

Steichen, Reich, that whole tree is very aggressive. The other part we're glossing over is the fact that BUF was 3rd & 10 at their own 27 with 0:18 seconds left. If you guys were Bills fans, you'd be telling them to kneel it and go to the locker room. Allen almost got sacked by Dayo and Latu... what if something bad happened? Instead, they make a big play, get some points... cherry on top was they didn't even need the TO. By the way, about me being the only one... most fans of every team think that the league/refs fuck their team on purpose because they don't like them. Not going to keep me up at night if we disagree. |

Wait there is another fact. The Dolphins WERE ALTREADY IN FIELD GOAL RANGE when the Colts called a timeout with 1:21 left. The Bills, on he other hand, were DEEP IN THEIR OWN TERRIOTORY when the Colts called timeout, and there was almost a full minute less left to play. Nobody questioned the timeout against the Dolphins, because they were already in field-goal range. Plus, there was almost a full minute more of time left on the clock. That timeout was not controversial or questionable. o

(vs. JETS, 11/17) On several occasions in the 2nd half, the Colts' offense put the Colts' defense in precarious positions (one turnover deep in their own territory, an ineffective offense punting deep in their own territory and giving the Jets good field position.) On the other hand, the defense gave up several 3rd-and-longs in crucial situations. The Time-of-Possession was greatly in the Colts' favor (67 plays-from-scrimmage for the Colts, 52 plays-from-scrimmage for the Jets), which also may have helped the Colts' defense.
