Reagan completely dismantled the mental health industry in America. It literally turned crazy people loose in the streets with nowhere to go, and no further help. I am old enough to have seen our government commit atrocities against its own people with reckless abandon.

The hearing room of the House Jan. 6 committee is seen on Tuesday, June 21, 2022 before a hearing focusing on the ties between former President Trump and far-right extremist groups.
The Jan. 6 House committee witness who President Trump allegedly tried to call after a recent hearing was a member of the White House support staff, CNN and NBC reported Wednesday night.
Citing two sources familiar with the matter, CNN reported that Trump made the call after the committee heard public testimony by Cassidy Hutchinson, a top aide to Trump White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, late last month.

The witness was in a position to corroborate part of Hutchinson’s testimony, the outlet reported.
NBC confirmed that the recipient of the alleged call was a support staffer, and had also been talking to the Jan. 6 committee.
Hutchinson testified that Trump knew many in the crowd at his rally on the Ellipse on Jan. 6 were armed.

She also testified that following the rally, Trump lunged at the steering wheel of his Secret Service vehicle and an agent in an attempt to join his supporters at the Capitol.
Secret Service agents are reportedly prepared to refute that part of Hutchinson’s testimony.
At the end of its most recent hearing, Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.), the panel’s vice chair, said Trump had placed a call to an undisclosed witness who has not appeared publicly at the hearings.

“That person declined to answer or respond to President Trump’s call and instead alerted their lawyer to the call. Their lawyer alerted us, and this committee has supplied that information to the Department of Justice,” Cheney said.
“We will take any effort to influence witness testimony very seriously,” she added.
Republican Sen. Mitt Romney (Utah) called the allegation “very serious” on Wednesday, and dismissed speculation Trump accidentally pocket-dialed the witness.

The Hill has reached out to Trump’s office and the Jan. 6 committee for comment.
Cheney’s revelation at Tuesday’s hearing isn’t the first allegation of a pressure campaign by Trump and his allies against committee witnesses. The panel alleged at a hearing last month that at least one witness received text messages from Trump allies in advance of their testimony.

There is a really good episode of Tales from the Darkside called, Payment Overdue.

It is about callous female collection agent who constantly harasses an immigrant woman named Rita Valdez. Valdez also has migraine headaches, 2 kids to support, and speaks limited English. When somebody asked the collection what she would do if she were in that woman's shoes, she replied, "I would not feel sorry for myself, like this woman does. I would learn the English language, and I would do everything that I could to better myself."

Well, she had just that opportunity to do so, as she woke up the next morning with migraine headaches, a strong Spanish accent, a limited comprehension of the English language, several kids to take care of, and overdue bills.

It was one of the best episodes of that series ever, and I would love it if it were required watching for high school students throughout the country.

Default Prominent conservatives issue report

https://www.cnn.com/2022/07/14/polit...ims/index.html

Quote:
A group of conservatives, including prominent lawyers and retired federal judges, issued a 72-page report on Thursday categorically rebutting each of the claims made in court by former President Donald Trump and his supporters over the 2020 election results.

The report, "LOST, NOT STOLEN: The Conservative Case that Trump Lost and Biden Won the 2020 Presidential Election," looked at more than 60 court cases Trump and his supporters filed and lost in six key battleground states. It reached the "unequivocal" conclusion that the former Republican president's claims were unsupportable -- which Trump's own Department of Homeland Security as well as election officials nationwide debunked days after the 2020 election.
The report was released as the House select committee investigating the January 6, 2021, insurrection at the US Capitol has been holding public hearings that have connected Trump's involvement in efforts to overturn the 2020 election to the attack that disrupted Congress from certifying Joe Biden's victory. Trump is considering an early 2024 presidential run announcement, CNN has previously reported.
"There is absolutely no evidence of fraud in the 2020 Presidential Election on the magnitude necessary to shift the result in any state, let alone the nation as a whole. In fact, there was no fraud that changed the outcome in even a single precinct," the report says.

The report is signed by retired federal appeals court judges Thomas B. Griffith, J. Michael Luttig and Michael W. McConnell, former Solicitor General Theodore B. Olson, former US Sens. John Danforth and Gordon H. Smith, longtime Republican election lawyer Benjamin L. Ginsberg and veteran Republican congressional chief of staff David Hoppe. Several of them are longtime Trump critics.
"Even now, twenty months after the election, a period in which Trump's supporters have been energetically scouring every nook and cranny for proof that the election was stolen, they come up empty. Claims are made, trumpeted in sympathetic media, and accepted as truthful by many patriotic Americans. But on objective examination they have fallen short, every time," the report says.

The report warns that it's "wrong, and bad for our country, for people to propagate baseless claims that President Biden's election was not legitimate."
It delved into a detailed examination of each case brought by Trump and his supporters in Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. Trump and his backers alleged fraud, irregularities and procedural deficiencies in their challenges in court.
Trump and his allies lost nearly all the more than 60 cases they brought challenging the 2020 election results, the report noted. Twenty were dismissed before a hearing on the merits, 14 were dropped by Trump and his supporters, and 30 included a hearing on the merits, it found.
The group of conservatives argued that Trump and his supporters had "an obligation to recognize that the election debate was over."
"Questions of election legality must be resolved dispassionately in courts of law, not through rallies and demonstrations—and most emphatically, not by applying political pressure and threats to induce Congress to ignore its constitutional duty and the electoral outcome for which the people voted, and which the legal processes of the affected states had examined and confirmed," the report says.
The group urged "fellow conservatives to cease obsessing over the results of the 2020 election, and to focus instead on presenting candidates and ideas that offer a positive vision for overcoming our current difficulties and bringing greater peace, prosperity, and liberty to our nation."
The January 6 committee has held seven public hearings so far, presenting witness testimony from Trump campaign and administration staffers that there was no evidence of election fraud and that Trump disregarded warnings that his plan to overturn the election was illegal. The hearings have also detailed Trump's pressure campaign at different levels of government and his attempts to enlist the Department of Justice in his efforts.

Tucker Carlson defended Vladimir Putin again, suggesting Italy poses a bigger threat than Russia because of its slightly larger economy

Fox News host Tucker Carlson on Wednesday night once again defended Vladimir Putin.
He suggested Italy is a bigger threat to world domination because its economy is slightly larger.
Carlson omitted the fact that Russia's annual military spending is more than twice as much as Italy's.
After briefly changing his tune on Russian President Vladimir Putin shortly after the invasion of Ukraine, Fox News host Tucker Carlson was back to defending him on Wednesday night.

Comparing Russia's gross domestic product (GDP) to that of Italy, Carlson took a leap and suggested the country with an active military force of 340,000 poses a bigger global threat than Russia's roughly 1 million troops on active duty.

"Russia's economy is smaller than Italy's," Carlson said, showing a chart from Visual Capitalist of global GDP broken down by country, similar to a pie chart. "The Italians, in other words, are in a better position to take over the world than Vladimir Putin."

The World Bank puts Russia's 2021 GDP at $1.78 trillion and Italy's at $2.1 trillion.

Aside from Russia also having around 2 million reserve troops — some of whom have already been deployed to Ukraine, according to British intelligence — Carlson omitted the fact that, despite having a bigger economy, Italy's defense budget is three times smaller than Russia's and their annual military spending is half of Russia's, according to a comparison from the Global Firepower Index.

How the Kremlin is trying to make Ukrainian towns Russian, from installing puppet leaders to flying Soviet flags
Russian authorities are attempting to strip occupied Ukraine of its national culture.
Russia has installed its flags, monuments, and politicians in several Ukrainian cities and towns.
The occupied city of Kherson is even being forced to use the Russian ruble.
Amid the ongoing violence of war, Russian President Vladimir Putin's apparent long game in Ukraine — a nefarious attempt to assert total and long-term control on the neighboring country — is coming into clear view.

From the introduction of Russian currency to the complete shuttering of Ukrainian broadcasting, the Kremlin is taking extreme measures to make Ukrainian towns look, feel, and operate like Russia.

Prior to the start of the war, Putin erroneously claimed that Ukraine was not an independent state, baselessly arguing that the country was a creation of the Soviet Union and part of Russia's historic territory.

Now, as Russia's invasion stretches into its third month, it seems Putin is aiming to make his claims a reality.

The same index puts Russia's military strength in second place behind the US, with Italy ranked 11th out of 142 nations.

Italy is also not engaged in an active war, while Russian troops have been accused of committing war crimes by the United Nations. They have targeted Ukrainian civilians in mass-casualty missile strikes, from a shopping mall in Kremenchuk to a crowded theater in Mariupol, where an estimated 600 people were killed.

Fox News did not immediately respond Insider's request for comment.

Russian state media has used clips from Carlson's show on several occasions to justify the invasion of Ukraine, which, by law, must be referred to as a "special military operation." A leaked memo published by Mother Jones showed Kremlin talking points telling state media outlets to use the primetime host's material "as much as possible."

"It is essential to use as much as possible fragments of broadcasts of the popular Fox News host Tucker Carlson, who sharply criticizes the actions of the United States [and] NATO, their negative role in unleashing the conflict in Ukraine, [and] the defiantly provocative behavior from the leadership of the Western countries and NATO towards the Russian Federation and towards President Putin, personally," the March 2021 memo advised.

Carlson argued that by virtue of both Republicans and Democrats remaining in favor of providing Ukraine with billions in defense assistance, his viewers should be inherently skeptical and question whether any of it will "improve your life."

"This entire conversation is insane," Carlson said of the bipartisan consensus. "Anyone who takes it seriously is a fool, and anyone who doesn't see the red flags is probably dishonest."

Default senators agree to clarify vice president's role in electoral certification

https://www.cnn.com/2022/07/14/polit...ors/index.html

Quote:
Senators from both parties have reached an agreement to clarify that the vice president only has a ceremonial role in overseeing the certification of the electoral results, according to two Senate sources, the first legislative response to former President Donald Trump's pressure campaign to overturn the 2020 presidential election results.

The agreement will be part of a larger deal to overhaul the Electoral Count Act, which a bipartisan group of senators plans to unveil as soon as next week. The effort was spawned by Trump's effort to get Congress and then-Vice President Mike Pence to disregard now-President Joe Biden's electoral win and install him into a second term, with senators looking to make it harder to do that future.
While constitutional experts and others say the vice president currently can't disregard a state certified electoral result, Trump continually berated Pence over the issue and told him to simply send the matter back to the states. Pence resisted the effort -- despite being a target of Trump and his mob of supporters who stormed the Capitol on January 6, 2021.
The pressure campaign against the vice president has been a key part of the House select committee's investigation into the Capitol Hill insurrection.

That larger deal is close to being finalized, with senators meeting Wednesday night saying that they are still ironing out some of the language.
"We're hopeful," said Sen. Joe Manchin, a Democrat of West Virginia, on Wednesday about the timetable for announcing a deal.

"We are very close. We have a few technical issues to iron out. And I'm very hopeful we'll have a bill early next week," said Sen. Susan Collins, a Maine Republican, on Wednesday who added that because of jurisdictional issues, the group may propose a series of bills to address the needed reforms, but they have not made a decision on that yet.
"The Rules Committee clearly has jurisdiction over the Electoral Count Act, Homeland Security clearly has jurisdiction over the Postal Service and over presidential transitions, which we are also trying to smooth out when there's a case when it isn't clear who's won," she said, explaining why the bill might need to be split up.
The senators said they expected their proposal to be referred to committees of jurisdiction where they would be assessed further before votes on the floor.
"The group has done good work," Democratic Sen. Mark Warner of Virginia said.

o

Is there any chance that we can merge some of these political threads ???

I know that the general board doesn't get much traffic in the first place, but almost every other thread in this particular section of ColtFreaks is quickly getting buried on the 2nd and 3rd pages.

Not that anybody cares about the majority of stuff that I post in the first place, but my thread about the historic college basketball games between North Carolina and Duke is already on Page 3, as is my thread about the Cleveland Indians changing their name to the Cleveland Guardians.

Merged them. Nothing was deleted, just merged. Maybe we need a politics subforum.
