Default Len Dawson Died

o

Len Dawson, Hall-of-fame quarterback who led his teams to 3 AFL Championships, 2 Super Bowls, and 1 Super Bowl title, has died.

Dawson was 87 years old.

Dawson was an NFL "reject" before blossoming into a Hall-of-Fame quarterback in the upstart, expansion AFL. In one of the most famous games ever in the 1962 AFL Championship game, he led the Dallas Texans to a double-overtime win over the 2-time defending champion Houston Oliers. That was the famous "We'll kick to the clock" game, in which Abner Haynes uttered those words after winning the overtime coin-toss. Haynes meant to say that he wanted to defend the end of the stadium which would have had the 60-MPH winds at his team's backs ...... but by saying "We'll kick" before saying anything else, it meant that not only would the Chiefs be kicking off instead of receiving, but also that the 60-MPH winds would be in their face. In spite of all this, Dawson and the Chiefs managed to win the game in double-overtime on a Tommy Booker field goal.

Even though the Texans were the AFL champions, they still moved to Kansas City the very next season because of the fact that they were having such a hard time competing with the NFL's Dallas Cowboys for the attention of the city. 4 years later, the Chiefs again won the AFL championship by again defeating the 2-time AFL champions (the Buffalo Bills) on their way to appearing in the first-ever Super Bowl against the Green Bay Packers. Dawson's Chiefs lost that game, but 3 years later they again won the AFL Championship by defeating the Oakland Raiders. This time, the Chiefs defeated the heavily favored Minnesota Vikings by a score of 23-7. Dawson was named Super Bowl MVP, completing 12-of-17 passes with1 TD and 1 INT.

In 1967, Dawson completed a then-record 15 consecutive passes in a win over the Houston Oilers.

Dawson led the AFL in pass completion percentage an incredible 7 times in 8 years (1962, 1964–1969.)

Dawson's #16 was retired by the Chiefs, and he is part of the All-Time AFL team. He was also the MVP of the 1962 AFL season.

Dawson was 87 years-old.
