Default Ken Norton Jr. Talks About Ken Norton Sr.

o

Prior to defeating Muhammad Ali in March of 1973, Ken Norton Sr. had a boxing record of 29-1 and was a top-10 contender in the world ...... all while maintaining a full-time job.

For his fight with Ali, Norton was given what was by far his highest purse ever of $50,000 (the equivalent of about $225,000 today.) And with that very large purse, Norton ...... for the first time ever in his boxing career ...... was able to train full time without having to work at a second job. Subsequently, Norton said that training full-time made him feel like he "had a wrench in his right, back pocket" entering his showdown with Ali. Norton broke Ali's jaw, won a 12-round split-decision, and went on to eventually win the WBC heavyweight championship of the world in what would become a Hall-of-Fame boxing career. Norton fought classic fights against the likes of Jimmy Young, Larry Holmes, and Muhammad Ali (3 times.)

Norton Sr.'s son (Ken Norton Jr.) talks about what life was like prior to his father's first fight with Ali ...... a life in which Norton had to squeeze in a few hours a day to train for his boxing career while simultaneously working 40 hours a week, changing the diapers of his son (Norton Sr. was a single father), and barely making enough money to put hot dogs and hard-boiled eggs on the table for himself and his child. Norton Sr. went so far as to save a few dollars by washing his son's diapers in the sink and re-using them to avoid having to continually spend more money on new diapers.

In this article, Norton Jr ...... who had a distinguished, 13-year career as an All-Pro linebacker in the NFL while winning 3 consecutive Super Bowls in 1992, 1993, and 1994 ...... pays tribute to his late father.
