It depends on context. I’m guessing a lot of you guys are referring to stand up comedians, and most of the "great" ones like Richard Pryor and George Carlin are dead. Perhaps in 20 years, the current crop of stand ups will be seen as classics, I don’t know. I’ve personally never been a huge fan of the genre.

In the context of movies, though, Richard Pryor flat out sucked. There can be no dispute on this point. Stir Crazy was decent, but everything else was total Sucksville. He had a worse batting average than Nicholas Cage.

I certainly won’t argue that Sandler has a 1.000 batting average himself, far from it, but all I can say is that I’ve laughed a lot harder during my 10+ viewings of Happy Gilmore than I ever did during Caddyshack.

Back in the day when Eddie Murphy was on top of his game both his stand up act & movies were outstanding.

There's a new sheriff in town, and his name if Reggie Hammond.

So basically what you are saying is that you are young. And didn’t see both generations. I can tell you without any hesitation Sandler does not belong in the same sentence as the likes of Rodney and Prior. Hell Chevy Chase has had a better movie career than Sandler. Eddie Murphy has too. Sandlers not as good as you think he is. He’s ok. But most of his stuff is stupid

Again. I am assuming you are in your 20-30s. Am I correct?

No, you are not correct about my age. Happy Gilmore came out 23 years ago - it's not a recent movie anymore. I remember when Caddyshack was released. Look, I've seen Rodney, Pryor and Murphy plenty, but I'm just not a big stand up comedy fan, that's all. Most stand-ups don't make good movies. Eddie Murphy is obviously an exception to that (sort of, if you want to consider him a stand-up comedian, even though he rose to fame on SNL).

As far as Sandler is concerned, don't mistake my love for Happy Gilmore as some sort of Sandler fan worship. It's just a funny movie, and for me better than Caddyshack. I didn't say I liked any of his other movies.

Plenty of stand ups have become good actors and made good movies/tv shows. It’s as successful as any other transition career, maybe more so. It’s one of the safest bets you can make when creating a show around a successful comedian. And there are quite a few actors who are just killing it and they started as stand ups.

Exactly... it's like arguing over which beer is best... if you like it and it gets you drunk who cares.

If a comedian makes you laugh your ass off who cares if another person doesn't think they are funny.

We all like different shit. Move on.
