I know that it’s a long way off, and it’s possible that one of the young DE’s, Tuimoloau, Gumbs, or curry, will explode onto the scene, opposite Latu. But, what if they don’t? You need a plan A.

Under normal circumstances, keeping Young onboard would be the Ram’s highest priority, but circumstances might be conspiring against them.

First of all, they have Myles Garrett on the books at one DE slot on a $160 Million contract. His cap hit of $15 Million is manageable in 2027, but it gradually rises to $48 Million in 2030.

Then, there’s the difficult free agent terrain they have to traverse, next year. Their free agent class includes.

Puka Nacua, one of the best Receivers in the league whose agent is probably looking to break the bank.
Devonte Adams, the starter on the other side.
Tutu Atwell, a prime depth piece at Receiver.
The entire right side of their OL in McClendon, Avila, Shelton, and Dotson.
Their starting TE, Parkinson.
One starting DT in Kobie Turner.
Omar Speights, starting LB
Aaron Donald

Including Young, that is, literally, half the starting lineup, the best half. I don’t know how they hold on to Young.

At the end of this season, if all goes well, the Colts will be on the cusp in being a legit Super Bowl contender. When Ballard enters the free agent market, he’d be armed with a boatload of cash and the enticement of playing for a ring.
