Didn’t lose because of any Duval County jinx
Didn’t lose because of the weather. Didn’t lose because the sun was in the seventh house or Jupiter aligned with Mars. Didn’t lose because Steichen got out’coached. Or Ballard got out GM’ed. We lost the moment Daniel Jones crumpled to the ground, clutching his right leg. We lost because we gifted them 26 points. We lost because our two best defensive players are sitting on the sidelines nursing injuries. We lost because we couldn’t use our backup QB’s best skill… his mobility… because if he had gotten hurt, the emergency Quarterback was Tyler Warren. It’s true that Jacksonville put up 36 points. But, the devil lies squarely in the details. The Jaguars Offense might have brought a lot to the table, Trevor Lawrence might be a crackerjack QB, the next coming of John Elway. But none of what they brought included the ability to launch and maintain sustained drives on any consistent basis. The Jaguars started drives inside their own 45 yard line 7 times. 5 of those sputtered out. 2 resulted in 10 points. They got the ball on their own 45 twice and managed one scoring drive. They won because they were able to capitalize on mistakes and took advantage of playing on a short field. A healthy Jones adds 10 points to the Colts score. He also erases at least 12 Jaguars points…the TD at the end of the first half, the Safety and the ensuing Jaguars FG. If Buckner and Gardner had been on the field, they might not have scored 10 points. |
