Fact: The distance between airplane seats, as well as the width and comfort of those seats has declined significantly since 1965.

Fact: The average height and weight of NFL players has increased significantly since 1965.

When you combine these fact of the two eras it's obvious that the players in 1965 were flying in more comfort than the players today.

Thanks for the info ...... I did not know that.

And that's crazy, about the room being lessened since 1965 ...... if anything, you would think that they would make the seats more roomier because Americans in general have gotten larger.

That said, I'm not sure that there is much that Jim Irsay could do about that, short of designing and building his own custom-made airplanes made specifically for his team to travel on.

Did NFL teams fly on chartered airplanes back then? They do know, and the seats are larger and more spread out than the standard commercial planes that us schmucks have to fly on. Despite the overall low travel score, 59% of the Colts players said they have a comfortable amount of space on flights.

Yes, all NFL teams do have chartered flights, except the Patriots and Cardinals, who own their own planes. The Pats had two planes for a time, but both were dated and small. They have since cut down to one plane and also do not grade well in team travel. The Cards of all teams, seem to have a large modern plane, and grade very well in team travel.

So, perhaps the issue the players have, is that they are flying on small dated charter flights. After all the airlines are surely losing money on these charters.

I would be really surprised if airlines lost money on these charter flights. I'm sure they charge the NFL teams enough and then some to make up for the lower capacity on the plane.

From what I found w/ some quick Googling the Colts charter a Boeing 767, so it's a wide body aircraft. Maybe some other teams fly something newer like B787s or A330 Neos, which could be an availability thing as I'm sure the options in a city w/ a large, international airport are much more than in a town w/ a smaller airport.

These chartered aircraft are usually old outdated aircraft that were gonig to be put out to pasture. Some teams players complained that the seats were so old that they still had ash trays.

So the room/space isn't an issue for more than half of the Colts players ...... thanks.

It's probably linemen and linebackers that say that they need more room.

That or they're divas. I wouldn't doubt someone like Franklin or Mitchell would bitch about their chartered seat being too small b/c it doesn't fold all of the way back into a bed.
