INDIANAPOLIS — The Colts will open training camp this week with five players on the sidelines due to prior injuries that are still healing.

The biggest name was expected.

All-Pro linebacker Darius Leonard underwent surgery in June to repair a nerve issue in his back that was causing functional issues in the ankle that gave him trouble throughout the 2022 season.

From the start, Leonard was expected to miss training camp time.

“He’ll miss some training camp time,” Colts head coach Frank Reich said in the summer. “But if all goes according to plan, he should be ready to go for the regular season.”

Along with Leonard, Indianapolis also placed defensive end Tyquan Lewis (knee), veteran safety Rodney McLeod (undisclosed) and second-year wide receiver Michael Strachan (undisclosed) on the physically unable to perform list.


Rookie defensive tackle, Eric Johnson, a fifth-round pick in April, was placed on the reserve/non-football injury list, indicating he was hurt away from the Colts.

Players on the PUP list are injured and can't practice but can be activated as soon as they are medically cleared and begin practicing. Johnson's designation means he was injured when we wasn't playing football. Teams are not required to indicate the injury that puts a player on these lists. Lewis, who re-signed with Indianapolis in free agency this offseason, is coming off of the torn patellar tendon he suffered on an interception return against Tennessee last October.

One name that wasn’t among the players placed on an injury list to start training camp is a big development for the Indianapolis defense.

Free safety Julian Blackmon, who tore his Achilles’ tendon last October, participated on a limited basis in the team’s offseason workouts this summer and indicated he was ahead of schedule.
