Default Raymond Berry Died

o

Raymond Berry, Johny Unitas' favorite receiver when they played together, has died.

Berry played 13 seasons for the Colts from 1955 through 1967, including teams that played in 3 world championship games in 1958, 1959, and 1964, winning it all in both 1958 and 1959. In the 1958 world title game against the Giants, the first-ever pro football game that went into sudden-death overtime, Berry caught 12 Passes for 178 Yards, and 1 TD ...... most crucially, Berry caught 3 Passes for 62 Yards on the 80-yard FG drive that the Colts desperately went on just to get that game into overtime ...... so 62 of the 80 yards on that vital, desperate drive in the final 1:56 of the 4th quarter were passes from Unitas-to-Berry.

Berry made 6 Pro Bowls, was elected to the Pro Football Hall-of-Fame in 1973, and his Number 82 was retired by the Baltimore Colts in 1973, of which said retirement continues to be recognized by the Indianapolis Colts. His Number 87 was also retired by his college team, the SMU Mustangs. Berry led the NFL in Pass Catches 3 times, Yards Receiving 3 times, and Yards-Per-Catch 2 times ...... in addition to his storied playing career, Berry later coached the New England Patriots from 1984 through 1989, which included a trip to the Super Bowl in 1985 and an AFC East Division Title in 1986.

When Super Bowl XLVI was played at Lucas Oil Stadium to culminate the 2011 season, Berry presented the Lombardi Trophy to commissioner Roger Goodelll after the Giants won the world title by beating the Patriots ...... in fact, Berry even proudly stated that he might even wear his Colts jersey while presenting the trophy, even though he played for the Baltimore Colts and not the Indianapolis Colts.

Berry was 93 years-old.

If any of you youngsters have a chance, go on YouTube and watch at least the drive referenced above. You will see what a dominant WR Raymond Berry was. By all means, watch the colorized enhanced version.

Berry actually died a week ago, on May 25th ...... his family delayed announcing it publicly, probably in order to have privacy for his services.

Berry was the first great route runner in the NFL. He had incredible hands. He and Unitas thought with one mind. He was a damn good coach on top of it.

25 seconds into the video, Berry is introduced. He then proceeds to make the walk across the field of Lucas Oil Stadium after the Giants' victory over the Patriots.

He is introduced as ) "This Colts Hall-of-Famer." )
