Colts sign undrafted UIndy running back Toriano Clinton. Get to know the Chicago native
Evan Frank
Indianapolis Star

In the wake of Jonathan Taylor's trade request and Zack Moss' injury, the Colts announced Tuesday they signed undrafted free agent running back Toriano Clinton from the University of Indianapolis and waived defensive tackle Jamal Woods.

Clinton hails from Chicago and thrived while playing for Division II UIndy. He holds several records and racked up a number of awards. Besides excelling at the running back position, he also was a standout kick returner.

Here are five things to know about Clinton.

Toriano Clinton's size

Clinton is 5-8 and 191 pounds.

Toriano Clinton's stats at UIndy

Clinton broke the school's career mark at Old Dominion on Sept. 24, 2022, and finished with 4,538 yards in five seasons. His best season came in 2021, when he ran 206 times for 1,525 yards (a single-season school record) and 17 touchdowns.

Clinton finished with 48 touchdowns in 43 games played at UIndy. He also totaled 39 receptions for 322 yards and four touchdowns in addition to 32 kickoff returns for 990 yards (30.9 average) and three scores.

Toriano Clinton is a Division II record holder

Clinton didn't just break school records. He also holds the Division II record for most rushing yards in a quarter with 197.

Toriano Clinton was a standout at St. Laurence in high school

Before UIndy, Clinton was turning heads at St. Laurence in Burbank, Illinois, in high school. Clinton holds the school's single-season rushing record with 2,557 yards.

In 2017, Clinton scored 34 touchdowns and totaled more than 2,800 all-purpose yards. He also ran for the single-game school record of 416 yards in the Class 6A playoffs.

Football wasn't the only sport Clinton stood out in. He was a state meet qualifier in the long jump.

Colts camp observations: Rough day for Anthony Richardson in return
Joel A. Erickson
Indianapolis Star

WESTFIELD — Rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson was back on the field Tuesday, as expected, two days after undergoing a procedure to correct his nasal septum.

Richardson, wearing a strip on his nose, took every one of the first-team snaps and an extra six snaps in a live period, on a day the first-team offense struggled to get going.

The rookie completed 5 of 13 throws in 11-on-11 work, missing high a couple of times in a 1 of 5 start and then dealing with pressure in a 1 of 4 performance during the live period, including the rookie’s first interception of training camp.

What’s interesting is the nature of Richardson’s misses so far.

Richardson looks like he’s making good decisions on where to throw the ball — even the interception was a throw he tried to turn into a pump fake at the last second, went off a defensive lineman’s helmet and into the hands of defensive end Khalid Kareem. The rookie has also looked like a natural navigating the pocket, a skill the Colts saw on tape at Florida.

He’s still working on his accuracy. On two throws early, a crossing route he threw high to Josh Downs and a throw too far behind Michael Pittman Jr., Richardson appeared to have his feet set, and on a pair of scrambles, he was hurt by Jake Funk’s drop of a low-but-catchable throw and by shoveling the ball too far behind running back Zavier Scott.

When Richardson is on, it can look really good, as it did in his best stretch of the practice.

The rookie quarterback hit on a string of four consecutive completions that included a 25-yard strike to Pittman Jr., a pair of short throws to Isaiah McKenzie and Pittman Jr., and then Richardson’s best throw of the practice, a play where he stepped up, neatly evaded the rush and hit a crossing Will Mallory in front of good coverage. In those two periods, Richardson’s only incompletions were a throw over the middle that Zaire Franklin batted away from Ashton Dulin and the Funk drop.

Defensive disruption

Indianapolis opened the workout with three plays each for the first and second units in the red zone, and the starting defense made its presence felt right away.

Richardson threw it out of the back of the end zone on the first play, a play that was well-covered, although referees did throw a penalty flag at the end of the play, likely for a coverage infraction. The Colts ran the ball on the next two plays, handing off to Deon Jackson first and then Evan Hull.

Neither back got anywhere. DeForest Buckner destroyed the middle of the offensive line for a stuff on Jackson’s carry, and Hull was met hard by Zaire Franklin at the line of scrimmage a play later, keeping the starting offense out of the end zone.

Franklin made another play at the line of scrimmage later in the practice, continuing to put together a good camp, and the defense forced turnovers for the first time in 11-on-11 work, taking the ball away three times.

Busting out

The first 11-on-11 turnover of training camp is also the best play anybody’s made so far.

Working through a play, backup quarterback Gardner Minshew faked a handoff and tried to throw quickly, only to see linebacker Segun Olubi leap right in front of him, catch the ball at point-blank range and take off in the other direction.

Olubi’s catch was remarkable; Minshew fired it at him from a couple of yards away.

But the second-year linebacker, who spent most of the 2022 season on the Indianapolis practice squad and played in two games last year as a special teamer, has shown up a handful of times already in training camp. Olubi’s been active in the running game, showcasing his development as he pushes for a roster spot.

Minshew mania

Working with the second team, Minshew completed 10 of 12 passes, including the interception to Olubi and touchdown passes on all three of his plays in the red zone.

Downs beat Tony Brown to the inside for the first touchdown, tight end Kylen Granson slipped through the line uncovered for the second and wide receiver Michael Strachan beat a cornerback on a slant for the third. From there, Minshew kept completing throws, although he did have one bad miss on a ball thrown behind an open Drew Ogletree up the seam.

The veteran’s best throw of the day was an anticipatory throw to a crossing Breshad Perriman, a ball Minshew floated out there early and instantly knew would be successful, throwing his hand into the air in celebration as Perriman got his hands on the ball.

Injury report

Running back Zack Moss is expected to miss six weeks with a broken arm suffered in Monday’s practice. If Moss stays on that timetable, the veteran back has a chance to be ready for the season opener.

“(The opener) is about six weeks away, so we’ll see where he’s at,” Colts head coach Shane Steichen said.

Veteran linebacker E.J. Speed also appeared to get banged up at one point during the practice, but he stayed in his pads until the end of practice and was available to do interviews.

Moss did not practice, leading a group that included tight end Jelani Woods (hamstring), strong safety Julian Blackmon (hamstring), cornerback JuJu Brents (hamstring), cornerback Darius Rush (shoulder), defensive end Samson Ebukam (hamstring) and offensive lineman Jake Witt (hip).

Two undrafted free agents, linebacker Liam Anderson and guard Emil Ekiyor, Jr., were also held out of practice for the first time.

Rush was doing 100-yard sprints with a trainer on one of the other fields while the rest of the team practiced.

Quick hitters

Tight end Mo Alie-Cox made a nice catch on a sideline throw from Richardson in 7-on-7, leaping to grab a ball the rookie had to throw high to get over the defender. … The Colts ended practice with six plays of live hitting, with everybody able to be tackled other than Richardson at quarterback. “I wanted to get the young guys in there live, to see where they’re at physically,” Steichen said. “This game’s a physical game.” … Defensive tackle Caleb Sampson came up with the ball after Al-Quadin Muhammad swiped it while Sam Ehlinger was trying to throw. From the sidelines, it was difficult to tell if it would have been ruled a fumble or interception, but it would have been a turnover. Sampson caught it in the air. … Defensive tackle Eric Johnson combined with Muhammad on a “sack” of Ehlinger. … Rookie defensive lineman Adetomiwa Adeboware had a nice rush in 1-on-1 pass rush drills, blowing by the offensive lineman in front of him. … Brown nearly picked off Minshew on a sideline throw in 7-on-7, dropping a ball he should have caught.

The Colts are bringing in some veteran help for their offensive line.

Indianapolis has signed Dan Skipper, the team announced on Tuesday.

Skipper appeared in 16 games for Detroit last season with five starts. He was on the field for 387 offensive snaps and 76 special teams snaps.

Skipper has bounced around plenty since entering the league as an undrafted free agent in 2017, with three separate stints with the Lions. He’s also spent time with the Cowboys, Broncos, and Patriots. But his only other game appearances came with Houston in 2019, as he played three games with the club.

In all, Skipper has made 29 appearances with five starts.

The Colts also announced they’ve waived offensive tackle Jordan Murray and tight end Kaden Smith.
