8/16 Taylor stort
WESTFIELD - Jonathan Taylor is back in Westfield, but that's as close as he's come to returning to the practice field.
The Colts' All-Pro running back was not present at Tuesday's practice, the final morning session of training camp before joint practices with the Bears and Eagles. He was the only Colts player out injured who was not watching practice, as Ryan Kelly, Braden Smith, Drew Ogletree, Jelani Woods, Mo Alie-Cox and others were all present.
"He's rehabbing," Colts coach Shane Steichen said. "I'm not going to go into any specifics, but like I said last week, once he's out here, he'll be out here."
Taylor has been on the Physically Unable to Perform List since he reported for training camp on July 25. That same week, he requested a trade from the Colts after they declined to make him any offers to extend the rookie contract that is set to pay him $4.03 million in the final year of the deal.
Last week, he decided to take his rehab off-site and was not around the team. Steichen had been expecting him back this week, and he returned, but questions remain about when he'll actually start practicing.
Indianapolis Colts All-Pro running back Jonathan Taylor has yet to practice this training camp while sitting on the Physically Unable to Perform List.
The team filed Taylor's PUP designation based on the ankle he injured three times last season. In late January, he underwent an arthroscopic debridement, which is a clean-up procedure with a recovery timeline of two to four weeks, a source with knowledge of these procedures told IndyStar.
Taylor has not suffered any new injuries in team settings since last season. It's possible that he suffered one away from the facility, but the Colts have not placed him on the Non-Football Injury list.
Until Taylor returns, the Colts will run a committee backfield. They're without Zack Moss, who broke his arm in practice and will be out until at least the end of the preseason.
The backfield currently consists of Deon Jackson, Evan Hull, Jason Huntley, Jake Funk and Kenyan Drake. In Saturday's preseason opener, that group combined for 27 carries for 79 yards with a long of nine.
