I don't think that he was necessarily making excuses for the loss, I think that he was specifically pointing out that the Eagles' defense is among the best in the NFL overall this season.
That said, the Colts had a chance to end the game when they had a 1st-and-goal from the Eagles' 5 yardline, and they failed to deliver the knockout punch by not getting the ball into the end zone ...... the Eagles have a good defense, but they aren't the 1976 Pittsburgh Steelers.
