Carson Wentz was very good for us

Not because of anything he accomplished on the field, but because of what unloading him onto Washington brought.

According to Bill Barnwell, over at ESPN, when the dust settled on the trade, the Colts had netted:

Bernhard Raimann
Jelani Woods
Drew Ogletree
Alec Pierce
And Josh Downs

A nice haul that would have looked even better if Woods had been able to stay healthy.

I'll take that haul anytime. Wait...................... Isn't the sentiment here, that Chris Ballard is bad at his job?

This is why I was hesitant to be on the fire Ballard bandwagon, even when the pitchforks and torches were out in full force. Yes, he traded a 1 and a 3 for Wentz, but I'd argue the above set of players is worth more than a 1 and a 3, so even though the Colts technically lost draft capital in trading for and then trading away Wentz, they still came out ahead from a roster building perspective. Ballard’s job is roster building.

Ballard is so good that even when he totally fucks up he is brilliant in doing so.....

Actually, the Matt Ryan fuck up was brilliant too! If he hadn't brought Matt in and followed it up with the Joe Flacco fuck up, we would never have gotten Daniel Jones! Brilliant! :D

Flacco moved teams again? He has more moves in him than a box of ex-lax! :p

Some of this isn't accurate (Pierce) or a bit of a stretch (Raimann and/or Ogletree). In the trade w/ Wash we sent them Wentz, our 2nd in '22 (47 overall), and our 7th in '22 for their 2nd in '22 (42 overall), 3rd in '22 (73 overall), and what turned into their 3rd in '23 (79 overall).

So with that in mind:

Pierce - We traded down from 42 to 53 and drafted Pierce there. No reason to think we wouldn't have drafted Pierce at 47 or still traded down and drafted him (although in all likelihood wouldn't have gotten the same return). The Wentz trade was pretty much a non-factor in drafting Pierce.

Woods - Used the 3rd we got from Wash on Woods, so yes the Wentz trade directly led to drafting him.

Raimann - The Wentz trade certainly had some influence here b/c we used the 3rd from the trade down w/ Minny to pick Raimann. But there's some nuance that's being ignored. 1) We still could have traded down from 47 and picked up a 3rd to draft Raimann. 2) Trading Wentz led to us sending ATL our 3rd (82 overall) for Matt Ryan, so it's still possible we end up drafting Raimann at 82 or put together a package to move up and draft him.

Ogletree - Similar comments as Raimann. Also think I need to point out that Ogletree is just a JAG.

Downs - Used the 3rd we got from Wash in the trade, so yes the Wentz trade directly led to drafting him.

This isn't to say that Ballard didn't do well with the trade and the '22 draft, b/c he obviouly did on both.

He's trying to set the record for most teams played on by a QB. My guess is that Ryan Fitzpatrick may own the record.

o

Josh Johnson officially played for 14 NFL teams. He was on the roster and on the sidelines, but did not actually play in a game for 4 of those teams (the Colts, the Bills, the Giants, and the Texans.) So, he actually played for 10 out of those 14 teams.

Fitzpatrick played for 9 NFL teams.
