Overall Thoughts On the Draft
Now that the dust has settled thought I'd start a thread on overall thoughts on the draft. Here are mine ranking our picks from loved it to hated it:
Loved the pick - Warren. Not much else I can write that we haven't already talked about. Only thing I think should add in hindsight is that drafting another position in the 1st and then taking Mason Taylor in the 2nd wouldn't have worked out for us since the Jets picked Taylor 3 spots ahead of us in the 2nd. Really liked the pick - Giddens. Productive runner with breakaway speed and has decent receiving stats as well. Reading that he needs to improve in pass pro, which is a bit of a flag, but hopefully he can get coached up there (doubt he can be any worse than JT). Like the picks - Tuimoloau, Travis. Tuimoloau should end up being a pretty good player IMO so can't complain too much. Just would have liked for us to have addressed a more immediate need in the 2nd round. Although from the comments I've read the Colts are planning on moving him inside on passing downs like Dayo, which if he can handle it obviously makes this a better pick. Seems like he's too small for that, but maybe he'll surprise me. Travis - As discussed in other threads, a huge dude w/ all of the traits and super athletic for his size. Hopefully Goncalvez or Smith can handle being moved to RG. Ok Picks - Smith, Wohler. Smith's write up states he's a good run defender but not much of a pass rusher. If he can be a decent backup NT to Grover then he's probably a decent-good pick. Wohler - Have my doubts on if he'll be able to do it, but he was a productive tackler in college so maybe he can make the move to LB from S. Reading that he was a good STs player, so if he can bring value there he's probably worth a 7th rounder. Didn't like the pick - Walley I'm probably listening to the pundents too much here, but seems like a huge reach on our part. Would have liked to have seen us have taken either Xavier Watts, or traded down and taken Ty Robinson, or one of the LBs who went in the early 4th here (we possibly could have traded down and still taken Watts as well). To be fair Walley was productive in college and ran a really good 40 time, so if he ends up being a good player then it was probably worth taking him here. Hated the pick - Leonard Just seems like a waste of a draft pick. There were some LBs (Kobe King and Kain Medrano) and OGs (Hayden Conner and Garrett Dellinger) that IMO would have been a much better use of a 6th round pick. Also, pure speculation on my part, but IMO Leonard would have been available as an UDFA. So why not just give him a decent bonus to sign him after the draft? |
I think you pretty much nailed it here. not anything I really disagree with

FI have higher hopes for Waller in the slot. The Wohler pick is what it is...7th round developmental LB...that may stick on teams.

They’d have been better off taking Kurtis Rourke where they took Leonard. At least Rourke can throw with accuracy.
The 49ers took Rourke and if he reminds me of anyone as a prospect, it’s Brock Purdy. In my view, there was no reason to take Leonard there over Rourke. |
