There will be a little turnover for the coaching staff this off season:

The contracts for Colts DL coach Nate Ollie and assistant DBs coach Mike Mitchell were not renewed, per source.

What am I missing about the D-line? That one does not make as much sense to me as Mitchell's.

It seems like the D-line coach was doing his job. Is he moving on to something better?

Coaching is about getting the best out of your players, improving the talent, and creating schemes that maximise the talents of the players at your disposal. Coaches who get credit for making a superstar pash rusher are often over hyped, the player had immense talent, was a top 10 draft selection, it is relatively easy as a coach to look good in those situations.

The Colts DLine has had quite a lot of high end talent signed or drafted, Buckner, Paye, Lewis, Dayo all high draft picks, Stewart was a mid rounder. I would expect them to do fairly well based on the college draft talent alone.

The defensive backs are a different story though. Moore was undrafted, as were Flowers and Baker, Rodney Thomas and Jaylon Jones were 7th rounders. We have drafted Cross, Blackmon and now Brents with 2nd and 3rd round picks, so you would like to think that their talents will start to develop. But to expect a coach to create a top notch secondary without giving him the talent to begin with is going to be much harder.

Maybe in an everyday scenario the coaches released weren't getting the most from the players at their disposal, and that is why they were released. NFL rankings may have little to do with things, it is are you coaching these guys as well as someone else could be?

Regarding Ollie, there has been some reporting that the Colts didn't think he was maximizing the players' potential - that he wasn't always putting the players in positions to succeed.

But there are a few coaches that have previously worked with Gus Bradley before that are now available this offseason so that might have been a factor as well - the Colts may already have someone else in mind for the job.

Colts add Alex Tanney to the coaching staff. This move had been rumored by the Philly beat reporters since Tanney was let go with this offseason's Eagle staff purge/makeover.

Supposedly when Steichen was hired by the Colts last year, he had requested to bring Tanney along to Indy but was blocked by Sirianni. Now Tanney can make that move one year later.

I can confirm the Colts are hiring former Eagles QBs coach Alex Tanney, per a league source.

Tanney, who will serve as a pass game coordinator, reunites with HC Shane Steichen in Indianapolis after they spent two seasons together in Philadelphia.

Jeremy Fowler was first with this news.

The Colts also filled the Asst DB Coaching spot.

Justin Hamilton has a lot of experience coaching at the college level and made the jump to the NFL last year as a member of the Titans coaching staff.

The Colts are also hiring Justin Hamilton as their new assistant DBs coach, per a league source. He was a defensive quality control coach for the Titans during the 2023 season.

Hamilton will replace Mike Mitchell, whose contract was not renewed this offseason.
