Frugal free agency
I checked our current contracts to see where we stand, and it explains why we are not going after the first day wave of free agents. We have a lot of players under contract (66), but only 39 of them are names most would recognize. This leaves 14 spots to be filled. We will likely see six or seven from the draft, but that leaves seven contracts to fit into the $44M we have. That is just $3M per player, including drafted players. I can see spending around $10M for one big name, plus a couple around $7, and the rest on rookie contracts.
Here is the roster, if my formatting holds up: OFF QB Wentz Eason WR Pittman Campbell Patmon RG Hines Taylor Wilkins TE Doyle OC Kelly OG Nelson Glowinski Pinter Eldrenkamp OT Smith Holden DEF DL Buckner Stewart Turay Lewis LB Leonard Banogu Okereke Adams Franklin Speed Moore Glasgow CB Moore Ya-Sin Tell Rodgers S Odum Blackmon Willis Milligan ST K Blankenship P Sanchez LS Rhodes |
To follow up:
1. Looks like we need far more players signed on offense than defense. 2. OL needs bodies, but so do pass-catchers. Defense has bodies, but need impact players, like Rhodes/Houston, whose contracts expired. 3. No way we go in with just 2 QBs. Probably going to see five or six defensive players added, and the rest will be on offense. Quite the opposite of the Polian days. |
I imagine Zach Pascal will get tendered as he is an RFA.
Mo-Allie Cox will probably be tendered as well. Just my thoughts. Odum got low level tender with Colts right to match? |

Pascal and Odum are now officially back - they both signed their 1 year tenders. https://twitter.com/Colts/status/1384131470751506444 Quote:

Don’t forget UDFA which are often used to fill out the bottom of that roster.
