Mark Davis has requested permission to speak with Colts assistant GM Ed Dodds and 49ers assistant GM Adam Peters for Raiders general manager position.

Lines up with him hiring a GM before a coach.

Champ Kelly has a very good chance of being promoted from interim role.

About as transparent as you'll get from Steichen... he said, "I believe in continuity" when asked about staff changes.

Specifically, the reporters were clearly talking about Gus Bradley. He seemed to shoot down the idea of changing DC's. I'm good with it, personally.

I sort of wonder about Special Teams Coordinator.

The Colts play on kicking/punting coverages was a bit...uneven...throughout the year.

If Steichen wants to give him another year, I guess that is OK.

Losing Dulin to injury probably hurt Special Teams a lot - at least early in the season.

Supposedly Carolina is interested in Dodds as well...

The Panthers also announced eight requests for GM inteviews -- a list that includes (beyond those previously reported) Ravens VP of Football Administration Nick Matteo and Colts assistant GM Ed Dodds.

Schefter reports that Dodds is in the mix for the Charger's GM opening as well:

Colts’ assistant general manager Ed Dodds met with the Raiders yesterday, and will do the same with the Panthers on Sunday and then the Chargers on Wednesday, per source.

OK, so it is still early and things can change but of the three teams that Dodds interviewed for - it appears that the Chargers are his best opportunity.

Carolina has started to request second interviews - that list includes Dan Morgan, Brandon Brown and Alec Halaby. This may be an incomplete list or Carolina may decide to add more names, but it looks like the Panthers might go a different direction than Dodds.

Las Vegas still has interim GM Champ Kelly keeping the seat warm. And apparently Kelly was involved with all the head coach interviews where the Raiders ultimately decided to remove the interim title and stay with Antonio Pierce as head coach. So it looks like it is Kelly's job to lose there.

Regarding the Chargers, there is reporting that they are the frontrunner for Jim Harbaugh. If Harbaugh decides to leave the college ranks and join a NFL team, I am sure that the team hiring him will ask him his thoughts about the GM position. And considering Harbaugh was linked with Dodds during last year's hiring cycle, it will probably happen again this year.

There are also rumors that the Eagles may be targeting Jim Bob Cooter for their Offensive Coordinator.

Since it would be a lateral move, the Colts could block it.

Report: Jim Bob Cooter could be next offensive coordinator of Eagles

As we continue to wait for official word (which might never officially come) that coach Nick Sirianni will return as head coach of the Eagles, it’s far more likely that one or both coordinators will be replaced.

On offense, Mike Garafolo of NFL Media mentioned on Saturday that Colts offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter could be hired for the job.

That would require the Colts to be willing to let him go, since he’s already their coordinator. In 2021, Cooter was a coaching consultant with the Eagles. He worked with former Philly offensive coordinator (now Colts head coach) Shane Steichen.

Sirianni hired Brian Johnson to replace Steichen. The offense hasn’t been the same in 2023 as it was last year, which resulted in a Super Bowl berth.

On defense, Sean Desai was hired to replace Jonathan Gannon, now the Cardinals’ coach. The Eagles were caught flat-footed by the departure of Gannon, who had said he wasn’t leaving. If the Eagles had known, they could have potentially made 2022 consultant Vic Fangio the head coach.

During the season, Matt Patricia replaced Desai as the defensive playcaller. It’s currently expected that neither Desai nor Patricia will return.

The Cooter move is obscene

Per Rapoport, Carolina named Dan Morgan their new GM.

The Panthers are hiring Dan Morgan as their new GM, per me, James Palmer, and Tom Pelissero.

After an exhaustive search, Carolina stays in-house.

A former Pro Bowl player in Carolina, Morgan has been assistant GM since 2021. Now promoted, he’ll work to hire the new coach.

Dodds had a second interview with the Raiders and is a finalist for that job.

Owner Mark Davis expressed hesitation to me last month about having a rookie GM-HC pairing.

Telesco has GM experience.
