I think the Bears just decided to go in a different direction. Chicago ended up signing D'Andre Swift to a decent contract during last year's free agency so Swift was going to be the lead back.

Cincinnati traded for Herbert after Zack Moss went down with a season ending injury, but Chase Brown ended up taking most of the snaps so Herbert didn't see the field that often on offense.

I've always liked Gallimore as a 3-tech. He did have an outstanding 40 at the combine.

I can't imagine that this is going to be a particularly large contract. It looks like he earned about $1.8m with the Rams last year. So hopefully in a similar range. Lets hope significantly cheaper than Raekwon Davis last year and also better play!

I don't know how he couldn't be better. Davis and Bryan were practically invisible out there.

2 years? Are they giving him a serious chance at the kicker job?

ukcolt 03-14-2025 05:58 AM

I spoke to my brother yesterday who is a Rams fan, and his take on Gallimore was that the Rams couldn't stop the run very well, which is the role he is being brought in to do here, so unfortunately this might not be the move to solve our problems. I hope he proves us wrong and plays the best football of his career.

Gay was not as good as in previous years, so why not look for a cheaper option?

He was brought in for depth. Nothing more nothing less

ukcolt 03-14-2025 11:14 AM

True, but with his primary focus being to spell Stewart/Buckner and be able to stop the run. Adebawore is more the 3rd guy on pass rushing downs. Davis was the man highlighted for that role last year, and woefully under performed, alongside Taven Bryan.

Gallimore is a depth 3 technique, essentially a hopefully somewhat improved Taven Bryan. That said, depth at DT was desperately needed, and still is even after this signing.

I agree. But we need a backup NT in the worst way.

No doubt. If we end up having to play Gallimore out of position like we did Bryan then we'll probably have the same bad results.

YDFL Commish 03-16-2025 10:29 AM

Have Speed and Blackmon even gotten a sniff in free agency? I can't imagine why they would.

Hopefully Balance doesn't have a change of heart and bring them back.

I haven't seen any rumors that they were taking visits or talking with other teams. Perhaps that will start this week after the initial blitz of free agency.

There are a lot of other team's fans that are interested in signing Blackmon. Maybe they are just looking at the "Best available free agents remaining" lists and adding their voice if they know their team needs another safety.

The Cowboys and Browns are typical destinations for former Colts defenders. I would add the 49'ers and Eagles with the coaching connections.

Other teams fans maybe but it’s clear what teams themselves think of Blackmon. He was a free agent last year and ended up coming back on a 1 year deal. Hes not viewed as an impact player.

The free agent market for safeties last year was abnormal - there were a ton of safeties cut from their teams for cap purposes and the market was flooded with free agents.

The biggest question / concern about Blackmon is his health. He injured his shoulder the first game of the season last year and played through it. He had surgery in the off season.

I would think most teams would prefer to bring him in for a visit before extending a contract offer...so that they can review his recovery from surgery as well as take a look at his current overall health status.

He has the talent to be an impact player. I am not sure if it is an issue with the player, or if the scheme was wrong for him.

ukcolt 03-17-2025 09:18 AM

I have no issue with re-signing Blackmon to be the third safety to a small deal, assuming he is fully recovered health wise. He has not been a liability, but nor has he been a game changer either.

AlwaysSunnyinIndy 03-24-2025 11:05 AM

Blackmon is starting to make his rounds today - he is visiting with Carolina first.

Reportedly Carolina is also bringing in a second former Utah Ute safety today - they are hosting Marcus Williams along with Blackmon.

EJ Speed is headed back to his home state of Texas.

Good riddance! Sounds like a special teams contract to me. Although I hope he starts every game and misses another 40 tackles.

Too bad really. At one point it appeared he had a chance to become a Maniac replacement and then it seems as though those press clippings became more important than the actual on field achievements.

I think that is being overly harsh. He was a 5th round pick who played well enough to earn a 2 year contract. I don't recall many people complaining about his re-signing then. Now did he play well in those two years, not especially, but he wasn't earning a boatload on a huge contract. He wasn't the only reason for the poor defense last year.

Don't disagree that Commish is being overly harsh, but he was also obviously one of the core players causing locker room issues.

YDFL Commish 03-30-2025 11:16 AM

I'm confused?

Was it the good riddance that was overly harsh? So there is actually peeps on this forum who wanted him back?

Is it the statement that 1yr for $5 million sounds like a special teams contract, that was overly harsh?

Or was it the statement that, I hope he starts 17 games and misses 40 tackles that was overly harsh? Do some embers of this forum want him to make all of his tackles? Do you want Speed an the Texicans to be successful?

Damn, it's not like I wished him out of the league or wished him injury or anything?

I think it is best for him to find pastures new, but i don't think it would have been terrible if he was resigned to compete for a Colts spot either on a reasonable contract, he has not been terrible, nor has he been good.

Good riddance, to me is overly harsh, as i don't think he was awful by any stretch of the imagination. Can we upgrade easily enough, yeah probably. But for me he is still a marginally below average starting linebacker.

You hoping he has a poor season for the Texans is not a problem to me, i don't want any of the opposition players to be superstars against the Colts. But i also have nothing against him if he became a pro bowler either. Speed had 5 good years with the Colts.

The same with Fries and Kelly i want them to succeed on their new teams, not so much if we play against them, but they have been good players for the Colts through the years, as has Speed.
