Notes from Colts camp

Quote:

A little sloppy for the offense to start in the first 11-on-11 of practice. Wentz 1 of 5 with an Alie-Cox drop and a Ya-Sin PBU on a Pittman slant. Eason 1 of 3

First interception of camp goes to Nick Nelson, off of Jacob Eason

Quote:

1-on-1 pass rush isn’t completely full go since it’s not full pads yet, but a couple of nice rushes from Tyquan Lewis, showing quickness to the inside off the edge

Some thoughts from the first hour of camp:

— Both Wentz and Eason with some missed throws early
— Parris Campbell looks all the way back: Fast, smooth + and some nice catches over the middle
— You can see why they like Kylen Granson
— 2 breakups from Rock Ya-Sin

One thing noticeable with Wentz in this first session: the way he changes arm angles to get throws off

Quote:

For the day, I had Carson Wentz 6-for-13 in full team drills. He was 6-of-7 in 7-on-7s and would have been perfect if not for a drop (Hilton).

Didn't look super accurate today, but he had plenty of zip and had a couple nice tuck-and-runs.

Quote:

Regarding the performance of the passing game in today's first day of practice: I would describe it as shaky.

But I also want to put that in context. Carson Wentz has never thrown to these guys against defense, despite their off-campus work in recent weeks. Be patient.

Another thing, as offensive coordinator Marcus Brady mentioned, they installed a lot of stuff just last night. Some of that was stuff they ran today, for the very first time. It wasn't gonna be particularly sharp.

Day 2

Wentz and Eason both looked much better.

So, it looks like Eason is the back up? I mean, will they sign a veteran?

Quote:

Wentz in 11-on-11 today: 8-10
Eason: 9-9, or 8-8 depending on whether or not you count a play he would've gotten sacked
Ehlinger: 3-3
Morton: 2-2

I don't keep 7-on-7 stats because of the lack of rush.

A few Day 2 Colts camp observations:
-- DT/DE Tyquan Lewis looks really good. Quick & disruptive.
-- WR Zach Pascal seems to have built a quick rapport w/ Wentz.
-- The competition for snaps at DT behind Buckner/Stewart will be fierce.

Thanks for typing this out, I got lazy and just posted a video. Great information. Glad we have Pinter, don't hear about him much, but he is an invaluable piece of the offensive line depth for this team.

I don't think the Colts will sign a veteran back-up QB unless Eason and Ehlinger have a really, really, really bad camp and pre-season.

Day 3
I always enjoy Keven Bowen’s notes from camp

Quote:

Jacob Eason ended Thursday’s practice with the starters and handled those duties all throughout Friday’s session. Eason finished the day 12-of-17 with a horrific interception right into the hands of Bobby Okereke. It felt like a Jacoby Brissett check down day for Eason, with him making an un-Brissett like decision with the interception. That INT came after several progressions, yet still on a throw that was not traveling very far down the field. Eason completed passes to Michael Pittman 3x, Mo Alie-Cox 3x, Jonathan Taylor 3x, Mike Strachan, Zach Pascal and Parris Campbell. Given this was Eason’s first extensive first-team work, and that he was down 5 fellow starters around him, this was probably the ‘meh’ performance to expect.

Rookie Sam Ehlinger ran the second unit and went 8-of-10 in team work on Friday. It was also mostly a check down day for Ehlinger, with the Colts focusing a lot on third-down situations.

Friday was a feasting day for the Colts defensive ends against all the offensive tackles. Kwity Paye and Kemoko Turay had several ‘would be’ sacks. It was a strong day for the edge rush.

After two days of Will Holden at left tackle with the starters, Sam Tevi got his run with the first team on Friday. It sounds like the Colts want to give those guys multiple days in a row with the starters to try and get into some rhythm.

Friday was our first look at the placekicking competition. Both Rodrigo Blankenship and Eddy Pinerio were a perfect 3-of-3, connecting from 33, 42 and 50 yards. Hot Rod met the media after practice and mentioned that his extra weight room work has him up 4 pounds from last year. He’s noticed more distance on his kicks, stating that he feels comfortable from upwards of 65-66 yards.

The Colts were down around 8 starters on Friday: LT-Eric Fisher (Achilles), LG-Quenton Nelson (rest), C-Ryan Kelly (elbow), TE-Jack Doyle (rest), WR-T.Y. Hilton (rest), LB-Darius Leonard (ankle), CB-Xavier Rhodes (rest), CB-T.J. Carrie (rest). With the offensive line down to two starters, the Colts had LT-Sam Tevi, LG-Chris Reed and C-Danny Pinter getting starting run.

Friday was a strong day for Kwity Paye. You saw his athleticism pop a little bit more, both in 1-on-1 drills and in team settings.

Seeing Mike Strachan split out in a 1-on-1 drill, your eyes are instantly drawn toward such a size difference. Strachan hauled in a deep ball in one of those reps on Friday, making it look very easy along the sideline. It was a small glimpse of what the Colts could potentially have if they can scheme up him isolated in the red zone.

Friday brought our first scuffle of camp. During a 7-on-7 rep, Michael Pittman didn’t like safety Ibraheim Campbell’s physicality after the whistle. The two got into it with Pittman throwing Campbell to the ground. There’s no USC pretty boy when Pittman is on the field.

Marcus Brady said Ryan Kelly (elbow) is expected to miss a couple of weeks with his injured elbow. Kelly was at Friday’s practice rocking what looked like a Barry Bonds elbow pad. With Kelly out, expect Danny Pinter (2019 fifth-round pick) to get the starting run.

The Colts broke a few big runs on Friday with Jonathan Taylor, Jordan Wilkins and Marlon Mack all involved.

Darius Leonard (ankle) and Eric Fisher (Achilles) both got in some field work with members of the rehab staff during Friday’s practice.

For those curious on some available quarterbacks out there right now (Marcus Brady deflected a question on if the Colts will add another QB arm with Wentz’s injury), you have Robert Griffin III, Matt Barkley, Blake Bortles, Sean Mannion, Matt Schaub and Ryan Finley. Yes, we do need to note those names, just in case.
Couple of names that stood out to me on Friday for various reasons: DE-Ben Banogu, TE-Kylen Granson, DE-Isaac Rochell, LB-Bobby Okereke, RB-Jonathan Taylor

The Colts will have on more practice Saturday before an off day on Sunday. See the schedule below.

Best news I caught yesterday was Banagu and Turay looked good, getting pressures etc. Doesn’t mean much this early but if one of them could turn it on it would be huge for us

Turay when healthy has shown he has ability, so he needs to stay healthy. Banogu needs to produce on game day.

Sometimes you do. If said teammate isn't following protocols on contact, and is trying to make a hit to make a name for himself, then you stand up to him and let him know what is at stake. There is a time for good hits, and week 1 of training camp is not it.

I watch and heard Tony Dungy lecture his entire team after a practice fight. Right there on the field at Rose Hulman he told his team, you fight a teammate, you run laps until the end of practice. Fights are 15 yard penalty and an expulsion. Control your emotions. Dont get angry, get better.

Thats when I knew he was a great teacher

Tony Dungy had a team full of veterans and his teams were expected to win the division every year. This team is in a different position a roster filled with young guys that haven’t won shit. If Pittman was fighting Blackmon or Willis I understand the speech, but a guy that probably won’t make the team takes a shot at him fuck that plant that mfer where he stands

Every team is different and I love Dungy but that’s fight I wanna see! Young, hungry aggressive savages. Expect to win, stand up for yourself when necessary! Set the tone for the season Pittman!!! Let’s fuckin go

Practice like you play, play like you practice. Someone beats you on a play, you beat him the rest of the game

If the defender threw in a cheap shot (in the first week of camp!), then Pittman was being a good teacher, because that guy will end up with a 15 yard penalty for that in a real game.

He gets thrown out after the first play, what does that say

That is why they need to learn it now. Pittman did the guy a favor.

When Leonard agreed to terms on his contract extension over the weekend....I figured that he was close to return to the football field. And the Maniac is back on the field today.
