At pick 122 in Round 4, Colts make a big move: It's a quarterback.

Washington's Jacob Eason is coming to Indy.

Chris Ballard has said for months they wouldn't force it. Eason will head to Indy and join a QB room that includes Philip Rivers and Jacoby Brissett.

Eason is 6-6, 231 pounds, similar size to Philip Rivers. Not much mobility but a huge arm.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen says teams found work ethic issues and accountability issues in Eason.

Eason on the Mortensen report: "Everyone's entitled to their own opinions. ... My job is to go in there and prove those stories are false, get in there learn from an outstanding coach. ... Go in there, compete my nuts off and prove myself as a workhorse and a leader."

Indy could be a really great spot for Eason, who'll get to learn from Philip Rivers and Frank Reich for a year (or possibly more) in Indianapolis. Huge arm, will get to play behind a great OL, and won't have to start from Year 1.

Moderate risk for the Colts, too.

Colts realize Jacob Eason will need some time, but they're amped about his upside. Elite-level arm talent.

He has very loud tools. The fact that the Colts drafted him tells me they're good with his work ethic, which was one of the biggest knocks on him. Hopefully Reich can improve his accuracy and mechanical flaws, but he has a HUGE arm and fairly advanced abilities to read and manipulate defenses for a QB coming out of college. Redshirt him and see what you have.

In the 4th round, this is an outstanding pick. Ballard said he wouldn’t force it and he didn’t.

I know that their time at the University of Washington didn't overlap, but I would think that current Colts coach Chris Strausser could really dig up information about Eason by talking with former colleagues at UW. Might be a bit easier to vet in this instance.

Big arm, great deep ball placement, can squeeze throws into tight windows, advanced at reading and manipulating defenses. You watch him on game film and these things jump out as the positives. He has a lot of tools for Reich and co. to work with, and he played in a very similar system, so his learning curve won't be as steep.

Have to give credit to Dammy on this one. He said Eason months ago. I watched him was intrigued and then started hearing the pundits talk about him Then lost interest

Good call Dam.

It's more of a baseball term, but I was referring to his arm, ball placement (especially on deep throws), and ability to read and manipulate defenses, which are very apparent when you throw on just about any film of him.

Ballards press conference was revealing. He stressed repeatedly that Eason just happened to be there when they picked at the level they felt he deserved. Said he will compete with Kelly and that he still has to make the team.

They certainly see him as a project.

I think he makes the team without a doubt, but this kind of language is surely designed to give him a kick in the ass, given that the knock on him is whether he is willing to put in the work.

bertjones 04-25-2020 11:01 PM

He was the second tier QB I hoped we would get. To get him in the 4th
was an absolute coup. A perfect situation for him to be in to learn from
Rivers and Reich. If those guys can help the rest of him catch up to his
arm then goodness gracious.

Spike 04-26-2020 12:00 AM

Eason said he was excited to be a Colt since he has been a Manning and Colt fan since he was 6 or 7.

Eason meets with the media. He said all the right things, so hoping for the best from him. If he gets IT, he could be a monster for us.

Why is it a coup? He's a project. Sounds like he went right around where he should have for how much he needs to work on.

Top QBs often get over drafted. No way that 3 QBs were top 10 talents in this year's draft talent/athletic wise.

However, due to the position value, they were top 10 impact-wise. QB is just that important.

Easton actually was drafted where he should have been for his overall skill set. IF, and it is a big if, he puts the work in and takes the coaching / mentoring, then folks will be saying he was a steal because he can be just as good as the top guys. He has all the raw skills to be an elite NFL QB.

But, for once, he was not over drafted due to positional value. Great job, Ballard.

Why Brett Hundley is the Backup QB Over Jacob Eason

Coach talk. I don't believe anything these guys say.

Hoopsdoc 10-03-2021 12:37 PM

Eason scored with somebody’s wife. That’s the only explanation.

He’s sure as hell been better than Brett “One Hop” Hundley.
