I'm getting tired of former basketball playing "project" players and injured guys getting picked. Y'all know more than I do, but for me this feels like a C- draft so far. Gotta wait and see though (until October at the earliest in the case of today's pick).

Glad I decided to opt out of this crap tonight. More glad that Dam is still in melt down mode

I checked Colts.com to see who had the more ridicules posts. Its a toss up. Im disappointed in some of you for making it close.

In case some of you don't know. Ballard knows more than we do. Trust the process.

We went from a shit hole and a street pickup LT (playoffs) to a couple pass rushers from the AFCCG

I get it. Everyone has opinions. Just try to see the logic and mind set in this.

Ballard does not and will not draft for NEED. He says it ...he does it... One of these days you'll get that. It is ALWAYS BPA which is a winning mindset.

I have said many times that I dont expect a LT drafted when there are better players on the board. TBH. I thought CB or WR would be BPA at 54 and expected that pick.

We have a mobile QB now. Very comparable to Andrew Luck. Probably as close as we get without having the top pick in the draft this yr.

LT is important. BUT not at the expense of building a better TEAM

Ballard has a plan. trust it He's more right than anyone on here

I call BS on that Puck, Ballard does not know more than I do, and neither does any other GM in the NFL. Dam tried his best to know more than I do, but he failed. Nobody, and I mean nobody knows more than I do about who the Colts should sign in free agency and who they should draft. Shit, I should be the GM and head coach of the Colts. With all due respect, quit with your nonsense, please.

Turray looks to be ok if he can stay healthy and stop jumping offsides on 4th down. Hopefully this year's class will buck that trend, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Does doubling down on DE mean he's given up on Banogo and Lewis, two of his worst draft picks ?

apparently you haven't watched Wentz play a lot !! When he starts getting hit he starts throwing to the wrong colored jerseys. I don't know why most posters think that Wentz is the next Luck.

That only works if the Browns have the same # of picks over the next two years. The Colts have 2 picks to Philly if Wentz works out? And how he plays will will determine which round?

You are comparing two different Philosophies, picks and multiple years. You cant use Cleveland to justify what Ballard should do for Indy.. Ballard must take a long term view, not a yearly view.

I think you're looking too deep into what I was saying. I was pointing out that the Browns didn't give up much to move up 7 spots: Nos. 59 and 89 for Nos. 52 and 113. Based on that we should have had enough capitol in this years draft to move up a couple of spots to at least draft Radunz without giving up too many picks.

Also, drafting an LT to protect the QB you just traded for would be for the long term. Signing some depth guys like Tevi and hoping they start performing at a starting caliber level isn't long term either.

I don't think so.

The Colts now have nine guys on the defensive line that they have expended capital on in either high draft picks or free agency money:

Buckner
Stewart
Turray
Paye
Lewis
Odeyingbo
Muhammad
Banogu
Rochelle

On the Colts defense, they will typically have 8 defensive linemen active on game day with 9 on the roster.

Now the only competition for the bottom spots are undrafted street free agents (Brown, Stallworth, Cline, Wilson) or a low round pick (Windsor).

All part of Ballard's game plan. More competition.

Ironshaft 05-01-2021 09:14 AM

The thought I just had was that the Colts did pretty well a couple of years ago drafting two offensive linemen in the 1st and 2nd rounds of a draft: Quinton Nelson and Braden Smith.

My only hope is that the 2021 drafting of two defensive linemen: Kwity Paye and Dayo Odeyingbo, becomes anywhere near as successful.

We may not see much impact in 2021 but, hopefully, for 2022 and beyond it is a huge homerun.

Now I would like to see a depth OT, depth TE, depth WR and depth CB ideally.

Exactly, and he knows that everyone thinks highly of him so he gets cute trying to look like super GM thinking he’s gotta outsmart every body or reach on players when our biggest need was obvious

I would’ve rather seen him go with 2 offensive lineman

And that BPA shit is bullshit that’s why he trades back so much

So after free agency and the draft we are the same team minus our starting LT, the only improvement he made was Wentz this team isn’t any better then last year

Wentz has never had a good Oline maybe his first yr. and he was in MVP talks then

This offense is going to look a lot more like it did when AL was here than it did with Rivers and obviously JB

Day 2 press conference. Ballard pretty much rules out Houston back and is not planning to move Q to tackle

Oldcolt 05-01-2021 11:12 AM

I believe that Ballard didn't see any of the guys available in this draft as a long term answer at LT. He said that they were not prototypical LTs in this draft so I'm reading into that that they were not people he wants at LT for the next 10 years. He values line play, these lines are magnitudes better than when he took over. He is not planning on letting Wentz get killed and us losing ground on our run game. We should be happy we finally have a GM who not only has a philosophy (the lines are the most important thing on a team-both of them) and will actually live by it. If this works we will be a happy group long term. I trust him on this.

Hoopsdoc 05-01-2021 12:37 PM

I see the argument that a LT should have been one of the first two picks but I’m never gonna be to upset when they’re drafting for the trenches early.

Both of these guys have a chance to be really good.

I don't think that's the case. If it was then why would Ballard wait until after the draft to address the problem at LT? I think he fell in love with Paye's physical traits, which put him higher on his draft board than any of the LTs available at 21. Then he gambled that one of the LTs he liked would still be at 54, but unfortunately for us all of the 2nd tier guys were gone by then.

It's funny that you think I'm in "melt down mode", I actually liked the Dayo pick better than the Kwity pick, though Ballard's strategy was obvious from the time the card was turned in yesterday, which is why it backfired so hard with the last viable LT going the pick before him. Dayo actually has pass rush moves, splits doubles, and does the sorts of things on film that both impress and project to early NFL success. Dayo has a rush plan on every play, at least 2-3 developed pass rush moves, attacks any weakness in the opposing OL's blocking strategy, and constantly handfights. Teven Jenkins and Dayo Odeyingbo would have been an excellent draft. Add Elerson Smith to that in Round 4 and you're really cooking with gas. I'd still add Elerson Smith if possible in Round 4, dude went to the Senior Bowl and just won every rep, then you look at his athletic profile, and realize there's a lot to dream on there.

Maybe, but honestly, I feel like Paye was a wasted pick and the Colts would've been better off with Teven Jenkins and Dayo Odeyingbo. Putting Jenkins to the left of Nelson would've been so perfect, and he's as athletic and more technically sound than Castanzo was coming into the NFL.

But you had the opportunity to draft Teven Jenkins, and a huge need at LT that he could've filled. I like Paye's story, it's inspirational and makes me want to see him succeed, and he certainly has the right attitude for it. I just think we may look back in 5 years and regret Ballard passing on Jenkins for Paye.

While that's true, we all know Ballard isn't stupid. He has to know that LT needs to be upgraded from what we currently have on the roster. It's very reasonable to think that if he didn't think any of the LTs in the draft were worth drafting then he would have signed a FA already.
