The coronavirus is NOT a type of flu as you tried to say earlier.
The reason they are taking such drastic measures is to try to slow the spread so it doesn't overwhelm the capabilities of the healthcare industry. The farther and faster this thing spreads past the abilities of the hospitals to treat patients, then the more at-risk patients are, because patients won't be able to get proper care or will get turned away.
This was a slide from the American Hospital Association's webinar in February to prepare hospitals for what to expect from this in the next 6-12 months in the United States in their estimation:

So if they can slow the spread and drop hospital admissions from the 4.8 million estimated in the US to say 1 million or 2 million max, then they can properly treat them and lives will be saved.
