League source says Colts and Jacoby Brissett are close on a new deal. Should be signed on the next 24 hours. Will be a nice pay raise for the fourth-year QB

Chap confirms this as well.

Ian Rapoport‏Verified account @RapSheet

The #Colts and QB Jacoby Brissett have agreed to terms on a 2-year extension worth $30M, source said. He gets $20M guaranteed at signing. Some security for the new Indy starter.

1) Sends a strong message to the locker room.
2) If he’s the guy, 2020-2021 are a lot cheaper.
3) If not, they can get out from under that contract with minimal impact on the roster as a whole.

If you wait, you run the risk of him putting up solid numbers and commanding a contract on par with Garoppolo's. That's the downside.

What I'm suggesting is to frontload a big part of it into the 2019 cap space and structure it so that you can get out after 2019 or 2020 if he isn't the right guy. Basically, cut Brissett a $30MM check now and cut bait pretty quickly if he isn't the guy...or save a TON of money from 2020-2023 if he is a solid starter.

Pretty good Veve, you nailed it …

A little security on both sides. Plus gets us out from under the minimum cap expenditure rule.

I didn’t mention the impact it has on the locker room, though. This sends a clear message and needed to happen once Hoyer was signed. Hoyer couldn’t be paid more than Brissett.

Will they re-work Kelly's deal when he starts week 3? ;)

Well they sort of went this route

But only for the next two years. He could still be in for a big payday long term if he does well the next few years

This seems to give him basically two years instead of the current one year to prove he deserves to be the starter.

I think the worst case scenario here is he ends up being OK, enough for the team to be good but not serious contenders, and then they may be forced to overpay for him to keep him rather than make a move for a new QB.

Basically I don't want to see Ballard end up making a Kirk Cousins type deal in a few years, but then I don't think he is that stupid.

We are better off with him being either really good and then you just pay him and know you have a starter or just really bad and then you can move on in two years.

That middle ground is where you get stuck.

Nothing about this deal locks the Colts into a certain path.

Also, think of it this way: what message does it tell the locker room if you’ve committed more money to Brian Hoyer than Brissett, yet you keep telling everyone who asks that you think he’s a top 20 QB? Ebron, Mack, and Moore have already responded positively to the deal on Twitter. This tells the team that Ballard expects them to win and Brissett is the guy in 2019.

Oh after you sign Hoyer for his deal I agree you almost have to do something like this for Brissett. and I don't have a problem with that.

And I know the COlts are not set in long term for anything. But if they go between 8-8 and 10-6 over the next few years and Brissett looks even just OK, you are going or to be paying him $30 million plus to extend him. That is just the reality of the QB position pay right now all over the league.

Or even say they have one great season and then one OK season. THen you are stuck like the Cowboys with Dak.

he's had three years though now on this team and is a much better position to success than in 2017. I think he is certainly a better QB than we saw in 2017, he is not going to be horrible. Reich and this offense helps that too.

Lets hope he goes out and plays great, then there is no need for this decision in two years. I hope its just a straightforward " He is the starter, get the deal done", even if the contract is big.
