The #Packers are expected to bring in a huge addition, bringing in former #Ravens edge rusher Za'Darius Smith, sources say. They tried to trade for him a few years ago, are in prime position to sign him now.

The Packers also are signing Preston Smith, according to a league source. Huge day for the Packers defense

Well the Packers have finally ditched their conservative approach it appears.

Colts narrowly lost out on Preston Smith:

@JosinaAnderson
I'm told free agent LB Preston Smith is going to Green Bay on a 4-year deal worth $52M. $16M fully guaranteed at signing. Smith choices came down to the #Colts and the #Packers, per source.

Wow, Preston Smith, Za'Daris Smith AND Adrian Amos?

That is a very nice talent infusion into an aging Packers defense.

However, that should about finish them off in free agency since they only started with around $20m that they could spend in free agency and THAT probably means that they are putting in big signing bonuses to spread the cap hits over future years.

They don't get much cap relief by cutting veterans since it appears that they have been pushing money foward. Cutting TE Jimmy Graham would deliver $5.3m of cap relief while cutting DT Mike Daniels would deliver $8.3m. Otherwise, they care cutting starting OTs, LB Nick Perry or starting OC Corey Linsley.

They are done in free agency except perhaps so VERY low level stuff.

Walk Worthy,

I'm just here to watch some people's disappointment at "losing" free agency when the team is going to win 12 games next year.

Not if we don’t improve the pass rush. I don’t want to enter the year with a deficiency like the WRs were last year, and the oline the year before.

There are two primary sources of improvement from Ballard's strategy.

1) Draft
2) Develop

We tend to focus on #1, but #2 is even more important. If the coaching staff can't develop Turay and Lewis into quality pass rushers, then that's a significant failure.

Still, I expect Ballard to add another DL and DE high in the draft. If you can't get a pass rush with 4 1st/2nd round picks on the DL, then is the problem a lack of commitment of resources to the problem?

I’m all for drafting a DE but depending on a rookie for pass rush usually doesn’t work out well. We needed someone to help bridge the gap. With a rotation that shouldn’t be a problem. Plus we are now driven by need instead of bpa. Luckily this draft matches our needs.

I hope the second year guys develop bc it looks like they will be it and a lower tier FA.

It's not overpaying, it's called making a deal.

@gmbremer
Interested to see if the #Colts kick the tires on Earl Thomas. Obviously, he's outside the scope of Ballard's usual moves. But at 29, he's unlikely to get an exorbitantly long deal, and there are several Seattle connections in the FO.

https://twitter.com/gmbremer/status/...044446721?s=21

That would be interesting. Not gonna get my hopes up and I think he’d be a bit of a puzzling complement to Hooker, but I’ll take what I can get at this point. Would probably be a great mentor to Hooker as well.

Coltsalr 03-12-2019 12:48 PM

Not that I myself was particularly high on him but for those that have mentioned him:

@HolderStephen
I know a lot of you have asked about Denver’s Shaquil Barrett as a possible option for the Colts. Checked into him and it sounds like the Colts view him as more of a 3-4 OLB. Doesn’t seem likely to land here.

It would mean both safeties can switch off into a cover 1 andcwould provide some deceptive packages. But I don’t know if Hooker is the best inbox safety now. He has improved, but he isn’t an Amos or Collins.

Would be a great mentor for Hooker, if Thomas is willing.

Not a fan of asking Hooker to come up into the box. Thomas can do it all but putting him mostly in the box seems like a waste of his talents. I don't see him as a fit unless he just can't find a deal.

That's one of those where I'll trust Eberflus and the scouts to determine whether or not he would fit.

I also read the per year average he'd been offered by teams was between $11M and $12M/year. Probably not what he was hoping for.

The inability to develop Turay and Lewis into quality pass rushers is Not a failure by itself. keeping them around after they fail to develop, or keeping the staff around that fails to develop them would make it a failure.

Luck4Reich 03-12-2019 06:00 PM

I feel more confident we have coaches that can actually develop players unlike the last asshat.

Mosley was the one guy I was most hoping to get.

And then I saw the contract.

Let's say that they overpaid a little bit for him. By maybe 4.5 - 5 million a year.

We're good with Ballard doing what he does.
