Playing for the field goal in that situation was the right move this early in the game, for that reason (because it's so early in the game, and because there is a lot of football still left to be played.) If Gay had done his job, the Colts not only would have had 6 points on the board instead of 3, but the Giants would not have had that short field to work with, from which they capitalized on with a TD drive.
Also, the fact that Joe Flacco is the Colts' quarterback is another reason for that decision ...... if we had a really good quarterback playing, then I would agree with you......but since we have sucky Joe Flacco at quarterback, we can't afford to take anything for granted, and need all of the points that we can get early in the game.
