Even taking into consideration the fact that the team had the gritty, gutty Frank Gore for 3 seasons recently, Marlon Mack just may be the best and most explosive running back that the franchise has had since the days of Joseph Addai, Dominic Rhodes, and Edgerrin James during the heart of Peyton Manning's reign between 1999 and 2010. Vick Ballard certainly showed promise and potential in his brief time with the team, but his career was derailed by injuries.

After the Colts' win over the Chiefs on Sunday night, Mike Wells noted that Mack was on pace to be the 1,500-yard rusher in which Jim Irsay envisioned him to be when he was drafted in 2017. Joel A. Erickson opines that the cat inevitably was going to come out of the bag, as it has.

Colts RB Marlon Mack was NFL's Best-Kept Secret — but the Secret is Out

I have been impressed with his patience. He waits then explodes.

Marlin Mack is a good running back. As was Joseph Addai and Dominic Rhodes. Edge was a great running back, as was Marshall Faulk.

I'm moving more toward Edge and Marshall than Addai and Rhodes. He was known as a bust it to the outside speed guy almost exclusively out of college, he's transformed himself into a guy that can hurt you inside and is one of those guys that doesn't seem to go backwards. Obviously the pass catching aspect is sort of removed by way of Hines.

no. He is still closer to addai/rhodes than edge/faulk.

Mack has traits that remind me very much of Edge, though he's not that good. He definitely shows the same patience and ability to guide his blockers to create our increase running lanes for himself.

Give the RB coach some props. Those guys press the hole and then go full bore. Macks high knee running is starting to remind me of the guy Rathman used to block for in SF

Good Ol' Roger Craig, rock solid RB for a long time.

The entire RB group is probably the most solid I’ve ever seen in Indianapolis.

James/Rhodes, Addia/Rhodes, Addai/Brown, Brown/Ballard. We’ve had duos that could contribute at a high level.

I’ve never seen three RBs that can all be legitimate contributors. Hynes is the best receiving back on the team, Wilkins is a good downhill back that can run with power and still break long runs, and Mack is easily the best pure runner of all of them.

I love the fact that Wilkins/Mack can run the same plays, and Hynes/Mack can run (mostly) the same plays. So much versatility.

If they can just get the deep ball working the defenses job will be so much easier.

To be fair, the Jets O line is bottom 5 in the league while the Colts is top 5. Still he wasnt worth the money he got and that's what he gets to go to a loser for the money. Whatever makes him happy lol.

Interestingly, even among Jets running backs (all of whom have to deal with the same OL), Bell has the lowest YPC average.

I don't give a duck about Leveon Bell. He's not a Coat.

As far as Mack is concerned, he very much reminds me of Addai. Yet, he adds another element w/the Edge stiff arm and maybe a little tougher inside running than Addai.

I see Donald Brown speed with Ballard patience. I loved Ballard BTW

#Colts RB Marlon Mack suffered a right hand fracture during today’s game, source said, but the severity will be determined after seeing specialists early this week. He almost certainly won’t play Thursday, but it’s up in the air beyond that.

At least we have some other guys who can step up in his place.

Tough break about Mack, but I have been wanting to see more of Hines. A play for the future at a critical time. Colts on the 2 yard line, put Nelson as the back, but do play action to him and toss an easy TD to Doyle.

Jordan Wilkins says he feels pretty good. Said Colts decided early last week that he'd get the Jaguars game off, but as the week went on, he started thinking he could maybe have played.

Mack misses time every year due to injury. He is a good player, but he clearly has some durability issues. All starting RB's should be running inside the tackles at times, so not sure why that's even being brought up? The good thing is we have the depth to step in and play well while Mack is out.

I kinda wish we had landed Josh Jacobs in the draft. I don’t know about this drafts RB group. Maybe a big back like Najee Harris. Although the Utah kids reminds me of MJD a little. Might be a fun back with this oline.

He doesn't get much hype, but every time I watch the Gators he always looks like he knows how to run. He gets tough yards, holds onto the ball, and can make a big play too.

I think he looks like he has enough positives that would transfer to the pros. Florida's QB's have been ok, so it's not like opposing defenses are worried about that and ignoring the run. He ran well against LSU--not dominant, but that's about as pro-level of a defense as it gets.

I'm not one of the draft/prospect gurus here, so I defer to their opinion if they say otherwise. The Gators are my favorite team and I watch a lot of SEC football, but I'm usually not over-the-top with thinking every Gator will do well in the NFL. Since the mid-90's when I started following them here's the list of guys I REALLY wanted the Colts to draft:

Jevon Kearse
Mike Peterson (YEAH!)
Reggie Nelson (Safety)
Mike Gillislee (RB)
Vernon Hargreaves III

...ok and Danny Wuerffel as a backup QB :o , but only because I was a goofy kid who was excited that he won the national championship with them.

Everything I've seen of Edwards-Helaire makes me want the Colts to draft him. He seems pretty complete and is a very tough runner.

Yeah he has good hands also. Low center of gravity, good short area quickness. LSU always seems to have good backs. You could likely get him in later rounds.

Etienne is having a great year and has a forced missed tackle on half his rushing attempts which is incredible. Zach Moss is right behind him at almost half. I think either would be a nice addition. Some don’t like Etienne, but I think he suffers from over analysis bc he has been around awhile.

Hahaha - Henry is asking for the moon for his next contract. I guess if they don't reach an agreement, they could still tag him.

https://www.al.com/sports/2020/02/derrick-henry-sets-asking-price-in-free-agency.html

“Zeke numbers is the floor,” Henry said on “The Rich Eisen Show” about his asking price.

Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott has the largest contract for a running back in the NFL in total value, average value and guaranteed money. After a holdout, Elliott signed a six-year, $90 million contract extension that included $50 million in guaranteed money four days before the Cowboys kicked off their 2019 season.

The sports financial website spotrac.com estimates Henry’s market value as meriting a four-year, $55.3 million contract. Among the NFL’s running backs, only Elliott and the Los Angeles Rams’ Todd Gurley have contracts larger than Henry’s estimated value.

Tennessee could use its franchise tag to retain the running back. The sports financial website overthecap.com estimates the franchise-tag value for running backs in 2020 will be $12.474 million.

He just started going beast mode in November. Is that when he remembered it was a contract year? 15 carries for 24 yards against Denver, 17 for 44 against Jacksonville, both earlier games in the year. Yeah, hold out until you get paid big man. He probably should've shown up every game if he wants highest-paid RB numbers.

I like Mack, but I don't love him. He always seems nicked up and it hurts his speed and big play ability. I would really like them to draft another back in order to find some consistency when Mack is out. I like the depth behind him, but they seem to serve different purposes. On the flipside I don't think MAck will be that expensive, not that we are hurting for money in the least.

The nice things is Mack is young, 23 going into his 2nd contract so he will likely hit his prime soon. Compare that to Henry who is 26 and likely to start declining in a few years. But I would still like a good pick to pair him with.
