Odd that he would have come back for preseason then take off.

Frank Reich starts with an update. Senior offensive consultant Howard Mudd has decided to step down on his own terms.
Reich calls Mudd’s contribution over the past six months “tremendous.” #Colts
That sucks

This was expected by me.
I explain in my live video stream.
So many people not seeing that this was something that was most likely was going to happen, stuns me.
The signs were there.
It just seemed to me he was only here to help with the transition from Dave G. to Chris S, as a favor to a few friends on the current Colts team.

Next to QB, the O-line is my biggest concern this season. They played well last year and then fired DeGiliamo for whatever reason. Hope that doesn't bite them in the ass.

I'm surprised no one has said there might be a ripple effect to the o line looking worse due to the occasional missed audible or some such. Stick with a play when a better QB reads the problem before the snap, play gets blown up, o line is blamed.

Last coach was more of a yeller, not a teacher. New coach from Mudd tree, so hes teaching. Howards health has gone up and down, so while not surprised, I hope hes ok

I would guess that he old and didnt really want to go through a whole season - travel, schedule, etc. Like was mentioned above, he probably came in to get some things established and went back to retirement.

I'm hoping Mudd felt redundant

Mudd is 77, he was not going to be a long term part of the team.

Wasn’t he more in an advisory capacity anyway? Got the impression this was always temporary.

Nope, and certainly wasn't going to travel with them.

That was my impression as well. I hope it is more he feels his job was done and not for health reasons.

Mudd hasn't been totally out of football since his retirement several years ago....but much of that previous post-retirement work was consulting a few days here and there or maybe even a week or two for NFL or college teams. This role was different - a place on the staff and coming to work every day for 7 months. My guess is that he wanted to get back to Washington state and spend some time riding his motorcycle. At the age of 77, he certainly has the right to do what makes him happy.

This was totally on Mudd's terms, Reich says. Just ready to move on. Helped set things up during the offseason to set the tone, which is nice.

Reich: "He mentioned to me in the last couple weeks that he thought his time was coming. We thank him for his contributions."
Mudd has had some physical limitations, though it's not clear whether that's a factor.
