Yeah, same guy. It's been awhile. Was curious what folks were saying about Nelson.
1. I was happy with the Nelson pick at #6. I wanted the O-line fixed.
2. I have not been nervious at all about his progress this season even when he was "rag dolled" a couple of times in pre-season and early in the regular season. I know that even though he was an outstanding prospect, NFL rookies often get schooled by veterans. That is how they become better.
3. And better he has become. He is rarely out of position now, rarely beat and oftent he one delivering the punishment instead. Playing like a veteran halfway into the season.
4. I was also thrilled with the signing of Smith whom I wanted pre-draft as well as the signing of Slausson. I was less excited about the pick-up of Glowinski and, obviously, he has bloomed beyond all previously shown talent level in the Colts system.
5. We are now in 2nd place with the fewest sacks allowed with 10 on the season. NO leads the league with 9 sacks given up. The 154 yards rushing we have averaged over the past 4 games would lead the league if sustained for a whole season.
6. Opponents of the pick said that an OG could not impact a game enough to warrent the #6 pick. See bullet #5 above and then think about our O-Line last year. Hmmmm.......
7. Good golly I hope these kids can stay healthy and gel even further as a group. They have a chance to become a pretty special O-line if these last 4 games is any indication.
8. O-Line free agents:
2019:
OG Mark Glowinski - Priority re-sign at NFL starter pay
OT J'Marcus Webb - Sign to solid depth contract. Liked him before injury
OT Denzelle Good - Okay with a solid depth contract but he is never healthy
Do not re-sign: Slauson (too old) and Boehm (who?).
2020:
OT Anthony Castonzo - Will be 32 at time of re-signing. As long as he is playing well, a 3 year starter level contract would be good but I would not sign him longer and we need to have a heir apperant waiting in the wings.
OG/T Joe Haeg - Re-sign to a good depth contract. Is always ready to fill in and give quality minutes
OT Le'Raven Clark - Pretty much a must re-sign as long as he continues to progress. He might be the LT heir apperant or he might just be depth but he showed this season that he can be trusted to hold down one of the OT slots.
2021:
OC Ryan Kelly - Priority Re-sign if he continues to progress.
2022:
OT Braden Smith - Priority Re-sign if he continues to progress.
2023:
OG Quinton Nelson (5th year option) - Priority re-sign even if he stays exactly like he is now (which he won't)
We are in GREAT shape in that we only have one current O-line starter coming up each year for a new contact. We don't really have to pick "either/or" on whom to sign.
We also have good depth in Clark, Haeg, Webb and Good whom have all shown starter level potential at one time or another.
I would still maintain that we need to draft an O-lineman each and every year but now none before the 3rd round unless we think they are starter LT material and have dropped well below their expected draft position for one reason or another.
Lets keep this rolling, Ballard!

Nelson says the viral vid was edited:

Quenton Nelson didn't scream while he was delivering a crushing pancake block against Jaguars safety Barry Church during Sunday's 29–26 win, the Colts rookie guard said on Tuesday.
"I saw it got pretty viral on the internet, which was cool," Nelson told reporters on Tuesday. "(But) I wasn't yelling, not on that play. I don't know how it got amped up like that."
According to The Indianapolis Star, a Colts spokesperson told reporters that the team used audio of Nelson screaming on an earlier play and added it to the video of Nelson flattening Church into the ground for fun. The video went viral on Twitter on Monday and had more than 11,000 retweets and 37,000 likes on Tuesday afternoon.
The play from which the audio was pulled from happened late in the first half, where Nelson screamed to be a decoy during a seven-yard bootleg by Andrew Luck.
The Colts released an accurate full-length video of Nelson mic'd up on Monday.

Walk Worthy,
I'll be honest, I haven't followed the Colts or ND as much as I used to for the last few years. Most of that stuff you wrote is over my head now. Life has changed for me overseas in Japan and don't have the time to watch much anymore. Always a Colts/Irish fan, but much more casually these days. It's good to see some old familiar "faces" and hope you're all doing well. I'll never forget some of the heated conversations we used to have. Good times.
It's nice to see Luck has an O-line that's protecting him now. He could be great with protection. I loved Nelson's fire at ND and now with the Colts. It's fun watching his highlights.
I'll try to stop by more. Take it easy.
Go Colts!

PFF snippet on Nelson:
Nelson’s early season struggles are now well in the rearview mirror after the former Notre Dame standout ended his Week 11 game against the Titans with a pass-blocking grade of 86.7 – the best single-game mark of his career to date. All told, he didn’t allow a single pressure from his 34 pass-blocking snaps, and since Week 6, Nelson has allowed pressure on just 1.2% of his pass blocks – the second-best rate among guards in that span.
That translates into Nelson having allowed pressure on the QB on just 2 of the 158 pass attempts (155 by Luck, 2 by Brissett and 1 by Ebron) the Colts have run during weeks 6 - 11.
The rook is pretty unreal and is as advertized pre-draft with all the hype. It looks like he can walk the walk of being a top tier NFL lineman.

Nelson is absolutely killing it this season, yeah he's been beat a few times here and there, that happens to the best of them (the defense gets paid too), but the mentality he brings to the O-Line has been incredible and contagious.
I love the fact that no matter what, he plays through the whistle every play.
Pay attention to the end of the plays, he's always the one picking up his teammates after a play, or to congratulate them on a 68 yard touchdown bomb, like TY this week when Nelson "Simba'd" him. TY even rewarded him with the football to spike.
This team is having fun out there, something I haven't been able to say for several years.
I am fortunate to have season tickets this year, although it's a boring ass 3hr drive from Michiana every week, I can't wait to renew/upgrade for next year. The crowd has even gotten back into things after a slow start early on.
As an HS/Youth O-line coach, he's incredible to watch in person and will provide some good tape to show my boys.
Been watching him in person for a few years now, but seems to really have figured things out these last 2 years, just glad it wasn't only a product of being surrounded by elite talent at ND and glad to see Mcglinchey having similar success at San Fran.

When Luck starts his scramble he and the entire offensive and defensive line are at the Colts 35 EXCEPT for Nelson and his man who Nelson has freakin stonewalled at the Colts 40. Not only does Luck run thru the hole make by Nelson's damn stonewall, Nelson holds his block until after Luck runs up behind his big ass and throws for the first down. On a different note, I remember a quote by Andrew a few weeks ago regarding Nelson having the biggest back he has ever seen. Since then I have been trying to get a good visual of Nelson standing next to normal sized people. I finally had the chance yesterday as I was at the game and could see the colts sideline pretty closely. I saw him standing next to support personnel a couple of times and that dude's torso is ginormous. You couple that with a mentality of destroying the oppositions.....Can't imagine that coming at me across the line.

After first hand inspection, I can confirm we do......in the interest of accuracy (I know this board has high standards) I reconfirmed a few more times just to be sure. :p
If puck made you jerk off, you need to raise your standards

Lots of good quotes/insight into Nelson by DL coach Dave DeGuglielmo in this new Indy Star article:
https://www.indystar.com/story/sports/nfl/colts/2018/11/29/colts-o-line-coach-quenton-nelson-nasty-and-its-infectious/2152133002/
Love this quote:
To put a guy down? That’s one thing. To put a guy down and lay on him, it’s another thing. You know what I’m saying? You put a guy down and don’t let him get up? That’s a third thing. There’s a degree of, ‘I’m going to make sure you understand what happened to you.’ And it’s natural to him. That’s a great thing. It’s not just how you finish a guy. It’s knocking him down and making sure he stays down..

I love this quote about Glowinski as well:
I don’t know if it’s a secret anymore. I get calls from all over the league, my fellow coaches, and the first question they ask is, ‘Where’d you find 64?’ It’s usually calling about some scheme, a team we played, whatever, or to share some thoughts. ‘Boy you got a good one in 56 (Nelson), but where’d you find 64?’ Like, right away they transition into Glowinski. He jumps off the tape because he’s faster than any of them, to be honest with you. He’s the fastest guy I got, flat-out running. And when he plays, he sometimes looks like the Tasmanian Devil out there. He was once a secret, and again, I credit Chris Ballard and his crew for finding that and knowing that there was something there.
We drafted Nelson on purpose.
We lucked into Glowinski.
And with Smith producing well at RT, this O-Line is a hugely rebuilt beast.
If we can keep them healthy and re-signed, the next couple of seasons could be a LOT of fun.
Walk Worthy,

To make it as an elite team you need to 'luck' out on a player or two. Coaching really helps. Remember the beginning of the year. Luck wasn't throwing anything (hardly) deep. It looks now as if Reich had an idea of how to develop the line and keep Luck alive by not asking them to do to much until they got healthy and began to function as a unit. He put them in situations where they could succeed and built on that. Did the same thing with Wilson. Put him in situations where he could succeed then is slowly building on it. We get to watch him in real time develop (hopefully). It's fun to see the organization work together to get talent and then try to develop it. This is looking really good for us Freaks if we can keep this up.

Look, I’ve been around (Lou) Holtz, (Bill) Belichick and (Tom) Coughlin, I’ve been around some good head coaches, I’ve worked with some really, really high-respected head coaches, and I would say Frank does as good a job as any of those guys managing these people, knowing his players.
The guy who leads the (blitz) meeting – I’ve been around a long time, and it’s always been the line coach – here, it’s the head coach. We all do our research and get ready, but Frank runs it. And if you can imagine what it’s like ... it’s a different meeting. Andrew sits right in the front row, next to the center. Sometimes (if you’re an offensive lineman) you don’t see the head coach, don’t even interact with the head coach unless he’s yelling at you about something. Here, Frank runs the meeting twice a week. And we don’t go to him. He comes into the o-line room and stands in the front of the room. And you can’t take away the significance of that for linemen who, for years and years, the head coach has been (in another part of the building). He’s with them. He’s in the trenches with them. And it’s probably a result of him playing QB behind guys like that. And I love it.
We got a good one in Reich, ladies and gents. This organization is going to be very successful with good, transparent leadership at the top between Ballard and Reich.

They seem to work very well together. The complete opposite of Pagano and Grigson. Or to a lesser extent, Polian and Caldwell.

Absolutely agree. And I think we can add ownership (Irsay) to this as well. The guy is pretty hands off and gives the people he hires (Ballard and Reich) lots of latitude to implement their plans. He’s not a meddler like Dan Snyder or Jerry Jones, which is somewhat remarkable given that Irsay grew up in a football family and could easily have developed an attitude that he knows better than everyone else how to run the team.

You mean like Jerry Jones?
