View Full Version : Surprising stat - Colts on third down

The colts are first in the league for both the total number of 3rd down conversions made (20), and the third down percentage (61%). We are almost 10% better than second place Tampa (52%).

Sure, very small sample and two decent games, but last year we converted only 38% on 3rd. The Falcons led this stat last year with 45%.

To me this is coaching, focusing on getting to 3rd and manageable. If we convert over 50% of our third downs, good things will happen to this offense.

Under pagano, I was amazed how we constantly faced 3rd and long situations. Reich seems to understand how important it is to give ourselves a better opportunity to move the sticks

Amen. And because the Colts are often in 3rd-and-under-5, while keeping defense on toes with motion and personnel balance, it's been notable that a number of Colts' conversions have been WIDE OPEN. Going back to vanilla preseason, even.

It's a helluva more interesting to watch as well. I'm going to the game in Philly next week and can't wait to see it up close.

Couple of things:

* The running backs don't mess around. The Wilkins kid finds the hole, seam, whateveryoucallit, and gets down hill and + yardage.

* When they call a pass, it's like the old Manning years, there was always a check down. A route where you get 4-5 yards and move the ball.

* They build routes to get guys open. TY looked like he was having a lot of fun last week.

The Colts have always been near the top of the league in third down conversions with a healthy Andrew Luck.

My only complaint so far is they haven’t taken enough deep shots. They’re going to have to if they want to keep the short stuff open.

I suspect they are saving that up for some of the harder games coming up on the schedule. I gotta hope that if Jax can pass all over the Pats D, we can too. We have a punchers chance in that game, and I know the team will be fired up for it after the McDaniels bullshit.

I suspect they are saving it for ACs return.

You should buy a #29 jersey and wear it proudly.

Lol.....yeah that couldn't possibly go badly. This is the fan base that eats horse poop when celebrating their Super Bowl win. Can't imagine a woman walking by advertising her "services" would be a problem. :)

One big difference I noticed are the rub routes to get people open when we only need a few yards.

I would see teams running that all sht the time last year, but did we ever have a play designed for that?

GD, last year pisses me off just thinking about it. Fkn waste.

superior athletes should be able to do that on their own without having a coach draw up that type of play. dont be obtuse dragon.

I've watched a lot of football, but I don't confuse myself with an NFL coach. I could predict what the Colts would do on a given play. It was the football version of Groundhogs Day.

It's so refreshing to see the gains on first and second. Last season: 1st down telegraph run... then run... 2nd down telegraph run... then run. Oh gee 3rd and long and we don't complete it. I wonder why? That and they couldn't pass protect Brisset at all.

LOL.......Not going to argue that one since I'm not really interested in selling my services. However, everyone thinks I look younger than my actual age.

Because something gotta give, right? Especially with Luck back and 3rd down and short.

Haven't checked it but in those 2 games we haven't exactly won many a new set of downs after the 1st or 2nd one.

No, that would be the other one......the one where we are debating whether coaching matters.
