Any deal with Manning would instantly elevate the value of the Colts franchise. It's a huge money deal. Thus, the weeks of review.

I was also told that when Manning deal happens, he'd want to work with a strong GM. Ballard was hired for that role.

If the Manning deal never happens, it means that someone balked. I trust the source. They aren't inventing this and neither am I.

I know @jimosborne45 (https://twitter.com/jimosborne45) has discussed this deal with Manning on Twitter. I'm inclined to agree with much of what he's said on the subject.

I asked source for a deadline on Manning deal. "Before the 2017 NFL Draft" was the answer.

Since the deal involves minority ownership, it would require league (owners) approval. It has not gone through that approval as yet.

Since the deal in principle was agreed to, lawyers from Manning and Irsay families have reviewed the agreement. Cooper Manning is involved.

I received this news right around the time that Ryan Grigson was fired. The two events (Manning and Grigson) were related, the source said.

If this is true, Jim could be setting himself up for retirement with Peyton as team president and a guiding hand for the daughters when they take over. IF this is true...and I doubt it is.

I'm pretty sure he broke the PM neck issue in 2010 and that PM would require more surgery...then 2011 happened.

Any other sources? A story of this magnitude would be getting leaked and picked up by the big boys quickly. If nothing is being said elsewhere, then I would tend to doubt this source.

It would fit the timeline.

It was widely reported irsay wanted manning in the org. Manning say no way I work with greaseball. So irsay fires said greaseball and hires a real GM. Then tries manning again.

I would guess manning would have assurances to pick the coach, just like ballard has the ability to reevaluate after this coming season.

PM runs a tight ship. Things don't get out unless he gives the okay for it to be disclosed.

If it's real, the news will start coming out around the time of the annual league meetings March 26-29. That is probably where the vote would take place on the (minority) ownership sale. I would imagine Mortensen would run with it early next week if it's true.

Every bone in my body says don't pay mind to anything BBS says / but the thought of Manning in the front office would bring serious mojo back to the Colts, and that makes me happy.

No once cares what's happening in Indy anymore ...Manning seriously changes that, gives instant credibility back to the franchise.

So despite this tight ship that PM runs, this small timer quoted by the OP somehow got the inside scoop that no one else did?

It's not like this news is really news: PM's return to the Colts has been reported about before / really just think it's a matter of time, whether BBS knows it now or not.

It is important to the NFL world, and a rumor like this would be huge to report.

My point is either PM runs a tight ship or he doesn't. If he runs a tight ship, some small timer isn't going to get all this breaking news leaked. If he somehow got it, the big boys would get it as well, because they have a lot more resources and insiders that they get their info from. Either it got leaked or it didn't, and if it did, why haven't we heard from anyone besides this guy on it? Doesn't make sense.

So if that is the case, why have none of the big boys gotten ahold of this rumor and put it out there? That's the part that doesn't make sense. If there is a leak, those guys would have it and run with it as well, if it's true. That's what makes me skeptical.

Because legitimate journalists need two sources to run with a story.

I agree more with veve. The big boys have a reputation and will want multiple sources or at least one source they really trust. Who knows what source wells has. As said above, its a rumor that should be considered but not a taken as a given, that's why they are called rumors.

Let's play if you were in their shoes:

If you heard this from a single source and didn't feel it was 100% guaranteed, would you risk your credibility and possibly your job on this story?

I personally would not, but we have seen many times over the years where ESPN and others have put rumors out there with little to no regard to backup sources for them. It's a different world now than it used to be. It used to be where people made sure each thing they put out was accurate and backed up. Now many just try to be the first to break a rumor or story.

This whole thing may well be true, but it just doesn't seem right to me that only this one person is running with it and no one else. That makes me skeptical.

Technically BlueHQ has it as well, but you're right that no credentialed media have run with it.

That being said, nobody has gotten a denial. On Twitter yesterday, Kravitz said he would look into it. He hasn't come out with a confirmation or denial. If it were completely 100% false, you would think he would report that.

The more I thought about this before the Owner's Meetings, the more I thought that it made sense to wait until after the draft (if it were going to happen). You don't want that distraction, especially with Ballard having to address the media before, during, and after the draft.

Well I will still believe it WHEN its official. Not when reported by Brad Wells rumor mill.

And it makes no sense to wait until the draft. If anything just the opposite, I would think they would want him working with the team BEFORE the draft to give his input.

He would have to be approved by an Owners vote if he were getting equity. He would be stuck in limbo until then. Plus, he hasn't done any prep on this class. He would be nothing but a distraction at this stage.

Which, if I'm Ballard, maybe I'd like Manning to give me some cover fire?

Manning taking over President role or whatever would obviously be a massive, national story. Nobody would be talking about Ballard's draft at that point. Would certainly take the pressure off him.
