You’re right that missing the tackles is going to be a problem. And you can be successful with a short and intermediate passing game. But there has to be at least the POSSIBILITY of a deep ball or the defense will just compress and attack everything, because they don’t have to worry about someone getting behind them. And at this point Rivers isn’t capable of throwing deep.

Steichen might be able to conjure up something with smoke and mirrors but the Colts aren’t going anywhere if Rivers can’t throw it deep.

The 9ers will jump everything and choke all the short routes if they’re smart because Grandpa Phil may be smart but he just can’t throw the ball anymore.

It doesn’t matter how smart you are if defenses can effectively ignore everything more than 15 yards downfield. You can’t give NFL defenses that kind of advantage.

I can't remember a more Jeckyll and Hyde two weeks for a defense. 30ppg Seahawks don't score a touchdown and then the 49ers look like the Drew Brees 29/30 game the next week.

I gotta admit it was fun watching Rivers last night. Total control of the offense and knew where every reciever was without having to scan the field. It brought me back to the Manning years. One thing I noticed was that there were a gazillion 49er fans there and when they made a big play on offense they were loud but when Rivers was running the offense they were quiet. Like they were respecting an architect making a masterpiece past his prime. Just an observation I had last night.
