Guess there was more to that Spencer Shrader signing earlier in the off season.

The Colts have released K Matt Gay, their place kicker the last two seasons.

Couple factors that I think played into the Matt Gay decision:
- Gay’s inability to make kicks from 50+ in a dome severely hampered the offense last year
- The team does really like Spencer Shrader, who they re-signed this offseason. He has the inside track for the job in 2025

Schrader will still have to battle it out with an UDFA...or two.

Kickers are important. I don’t know if Gay lived up to his contract, but he was perfect from under 50 yards last year.

If nothing else the timing is weird, and it's not like we needed the cap space or releasing Gay even gave us that much in cap space savings at $2.75M. IMO it would have made more sense to have Gay and Shrader compete in the preseason.

My guess is that Ballard is eyeing a PK in the 2nd round with a perfect 10 RAS score.
He only hit 71% of his kicks in college but, hey, that RAS score.....

Did he have a bonus coming due if they kept him?

Nope.

Nope.
I didn't think there was, but since his contract details are no longer on OTC I wasn't sure. So the only reasons to release him before camp is to free up cap space or to take the dead money hit this year instead of next. Neither of these make much sense.

o
I liked Gay a lot ...... I'll be rooting for him, unless the Colts play the Commanders in Super Bowl LX.
(vs. PACKERS, 8/16) ) [Exhibition Game]
Spencer Shrader just made a 56-yard field goal attempt. l

Spencer Shrader has not missed a kick in his young NFL career.
In 2 games this season, he is 9-for-9 in FG's and 5-for-5 in XP's.
In his career he is 14-for-14 in FG's and 14-for-14 in XP's.

That said, I would have blown up Shrader's fucking car in the parking lot if he had missed that 45-yard FG attempt after the referees had called the personal foul penalty.

Yep, missing a 60 I can forgive, kicks 60+ have a pretty low percentage.
