Colts and three-time Pro-Bowl DT DeForest Buckner reached agreement today on a two-year, $46 million contract extension that ties him to Indianapolis through the 2026 season, per sources.
Colts traded the No. 13 overall pick to the 49ers in 2020 for Buckner, quickly signed him to a 4-year, $84M extension, and now, award him with another big deal.

That’s awesome. Defo is as good as they come and a consummate professional to boot.
I hope he retires here.

I have read a number of articles about the extension and no one is saying that he got a signing bonus with it.
If so, then the extensions are salary obligations only for 2025 and 2026 with no cap hit ramifications for 2024.

He's done a decent job of keeping his worthwhile players this year.

Colts now have 28.4 million in cap space with the resigning. Wonder if they are going to sign a player or two now.

OverTheCap has the contract details on their website.
A few highlights:
18M signing bonus prorated over 5 years (including 2 void years at the end of contract)
Nearly the entire contract is guaranteed at signing - $43.25M of the $46M will be guaranteed
2024 Cap number has been lowered to $8.35M

According to Holder, expectations are the cap savings will be rolled to
next year:
Stephen Holder
@HolderStephen
I had the same initial reaction as everyone on the structure of DeForest Buckner’s contract (surprised). But I’ve inquired and the only plan for the add’l cap space as of now is to roll it into 2025.
That seemed the likeliest answer, as I
@KBowen1070 and I discussed earlier.

"as of now", meaning they have not put it into a plan for a certain player, but now have the flexibility if they want to get a guy, possibly even a cap casualty player.

I’m happy to see the move. The length and structure of the Buckner extension matches exactly what I see - a 2-3 yr window with AR before big changes start in the structure of the team. I hope Ballard adds a meaningful vet or two with the available space. We’ll see though.

I hate to say it, but might have more to do with Jim. I have been telling him in spirit to sleep with Tiger.
