Unexpected. There is an argument to be made for a backup with more mobility and more similar to ARs style. But I’ve wanted more vets on the team to help mentor instead of bargain basement young guys. This is a good place for it. Solid mentor for AR and shown last year he can still win a few games when needed.

IMO this a great signing, because of Flacco's once strong arm and love for the deep ball.

This should be a great fit for AR.

Agree. He's a super bowl winner, too. That has to carry some weight.

Well, that’s an upgrade. Good move Ballard. I’m surprised he wasn’t holding out for a starting job.

Supposedly he also had an offer on the table from Philly and had discussions with New Orleans as well.

Before agreeing to a deal with the Colts, QB Joe Flacco had an offer from the Eagles and the Saints also showed interest in the veteran QB and 2023 AP Comeback Player of the Year.

Awesome. A great backup QB.

Interesting. Much cheaper than what Minshew got. Showed he's got enough left to be an effective backup. Could be simple as that...

But it strikes me as locker room value, like he has a connection with someone. Only one I see is between Flacco and Cooter ('20 with NYJ).

Does he have history with anybody else on the team?

I see it now. He was with the Jets in '20, went to the Eagles (with Steichen) in '21 for 7 games before getting traded back to the Jets.

So he's spent some time with our HC and OC (and all three are around the same age).

Good for a short term, but if AR were to sustain a season ending injury again ...

no playoffs for this team.

I wouldn't be so sure...he went 4-1 with the Browns last season down the stretch and is the main reason they made the playoffs. Hopefully AR is not injury prone and last season was a fluke!

Probably true. Although that is likely the case with 90% of backups nowadays. Hell, a sizeable number of STARTING qb's don't have a a realistic chance of leading their teams to the playoffs.

I would like to see management reach out to the local baseball team and get someone to teach AR how to slide. Then make him practice doing it and drilling into his head that in the NFL, if you don't slide you'll have a short career.

When Flacco was in his prime with the Ravens, he had terrible pocket presence ...... that may have improved in his latter years, as I haven't watched much of his play since then.

One other thing that I do remember Flacco for was an infamous sack that he took when he played for the Jets. When I was in 1st grade, I saw Bob Griese suffer a 29-yard sack against the Cowboys in Super Bowl VI. In 2020, I saw Flacco suffer an almost identical sack ...... this time, it was for 28 yards. Like Griese back on that Sunday afternoon 52 years ago, Flacco just kept turning and turning until he was finally brought down by the Dolphins' defensive pursuers. On Griese's sack, the referee briefly got in his way, which may have slightly contributed to the sack.

Looks like something Wentz would have done.

Wentz would have tried to throw it and fumbled.

You know what was just as impressive as his accurate passing ??? His pocket-presence.

When Flacco played for the Ravens, he had TERRIBLE pocket-presence ...... but this afternoon, he was MUCH BETTER at that aspect of the game than when he was in his prime.

On the Colts' 3rd TD drive, he somehow avoided sacks on 2 consecutive plays and instead was able to throw incomplete passes ...... THAT is something that won't show up in the box-score, but it sure as hell is very important.

(vs. TITANS, 10/13)

One of Flacco's most important plays in this game was that of the unspectacular, and largely forgotten variety ...... just prior to Michael Pittman making an outstanding TD-catch to give the Colts the lead in the 4th quarter, Flacco avoided a sack and instead got a 1-yard gain ...... if Flacco had taken a sack on that play, then the ensuing play would have been much harder from the 17-yardline instead of the 10-yardline.
