From NFL.com, their ranking of Week 1 starting NFL QBs:

32) Scott Tolzien, Indianapolis Colts
Tolzien is just keeping Andrew Luck's spot warm, but it's worth wondering if the Colts will be out of the playoff hunt by the time Luck returns.

Ranked under Brian Hoyer, DeShone Kizer, Jared Goff, Mike Glennon, Tom Savage, Josh McCown, and Blake fricking Bortles.

That.....has got to burn Irsay like nothing else. I know that he is only a "backup" but there are some pretty bad NFL QBs on that list.

I don't know that Brissett would rank any higher if he were the Week 1 starter but.....man.....

Not surprised at all, just adds to how this team has been so mis-managed.

When your so far under the cap like the Colts are it's inexcusable to roll with garbage behind Luck. There are always decent backups available in the offseason, yet they continue to pick guys who seem to be good thinkers at QB instead of guys who can actually come in and do something when the need arises.

From an earlier thread:
Not to be a downer, but whom would you have signed?

Mike Glennon and Jay Cutler all making more than $10m for 2017. Just a bit outside our price range for a backup QB.

Landry Jones (whom I like) stayed with the same team without negotiating with anyone else.

QBs over 30 (Ballard would probably have avoided): Josh McCown, Brian Hoyer, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Mark Sanchez, Josh Johnson, Joe Webb, Chase Daniels, T.J. Yates, Dan Orlovsky, Shaun Hill, Bruce Gradkowski and Charlie Whitehead.

Matt Barkley (26 years old) was available. Nick Foles (28 years old) was available. However, both those guys wanted a chance to challenge for starter duties. Not happening in Indy.

The Remaining guys:

Case Keenum
Geno Smith
Blaine Gabbert
Austin Davis
Matt McGloin
E.J. Manuel
Thaddeus Lewis
Ryan Nassib
Kellen Moore
David Fales
Aaron Murray
Colin Kaepernick
RGIII
Christian Pounder
Zach Mettenberger
Keith Wenning
Dylan Thompson
Sean Renfree

Which one of those world beaters would you have said, prior to free agency starting, is heads and shoulders better than Scott Tolzien?
It is easy to throw darts without looking it up, but seriously, which one of those guys would you have felt better about than Tolzien (who had a solid 2016 season) who was under 30? Which one?

I hate Tolzien from his 2017 performance but I think just about everyone was pretty comfortable with him prior to about a month ago.

Walk Worthy, why would irsay give a shit what NFL.com ranks tolzein? And it isn't like the dude has played enough to know how shitty he is. We just know he is some level of shitty.

We should've just kept Josh Freeman. Or we should just re-sign him, he's still a FA. He looked better than any other backup QB we've had during the Luck era. Including Hasslebeck.

I'm not surprised. Tolzien stinks.

Walk Worthy,

Forget signing scraps, instead of burning a late round pick on someone who will get cut or be player #49 on the roster, maybe trade a late round pick for someone who is worth it at a position that would actually impact a few games. Yes, they finally did that, but they could have done that back during the draft and let the guy actually have some time to mesh with who he's going to be targeting for passes. That's not the Colts way--they have to drag it out to the last minute, then put up the smokescreen nonsense of Luck just <GASP> surprisingly isn't ready for opening day.

To answer the original question--Connor Cook or Drew Stanton would be the first two, but I doubt Arians would part with Stanton. Beyond that, I haven't followed who was cut or who is hidden on a practice squad that showed flashes.

This rebuild was supposed to be designed to prevent something like 2011 from happening again, and yet here we are

no, the last rebuild (under grigson) was supposed to prevent something like 2011 from happening again.

this rebuild has the same desire, but is only in year one and will take time.
