View Full Version : Jeff Saturday confirms Matt Ryan will remain Colts’ starting quarterback
https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/category/teams/afc/indianapolis-colts/
Matt Ryan remains the Colts’ starting quarterback.
Colts interim head coach Jeff Saturday confirmed today that Ryan will start for the Colts against the Vikings on Saturday.
After the Colts’ ugly loss last week, Saturday said that everything was on the table, including potentially changing quarterbacks. But no change will happen this week.
The Colts could consider going back to Sam Ehlinger, who started two games this season, or to Nick Foles, the veteran third-stringer, at some point before the season is over. But on Saturday in Minnesota, Ryan will continue to start.

Fine by me. I'm hoping Matt Ryan is able to set both the single season fumble and interceptions record this year. One for the history books. He does need to stay healthy though.

I won't be surprised if he is the starter next season too, at least until our rookie is ready to take the field!

No, we gotta get out from under at least a portion of that contract. Let's see who the new coach is. They might want a veteran that knows the new system.

This mostly confirms I don't think I want Saturday to be our HC next year, he is being too loyal to the Vet when the only thing it benefits is Ryan if he gets injured..

I know I don't. I don't want any former players anywhere near the team. Nothing against them, but we have to stop living in the past. It doesn't work.
Now proceed with the list of players who became good head coaches thirty years ago...
Vrable didn't play for the Titans. Beat you to it.

The contract doesnt matter, its monopoly money. They will find a way to fund what every they need.

Frankly, I don't think it matters much whether we have Ryan at quarterback, Ehlinger at quarterback, or Foles at quarterback ...... the much bigger elephant in the room is the offensive line.
If you have a horrible offensive line, almost any quarterback will falter. Maybe Randall Cunningham, Michael Vick, or Fran Tarkenton could manage to get away with having a horrible offensive line and still somehow manage to run a decent offense, but other than that, your team is fucked if the offensive line is horrible.

Personally I would like to see what Ehlinger can do (or can't do). There is zero reason to start Ryan. Hey, maybe he won't turn it over this week. LOLOL
It sucks that the playoffs were more easily attained this year but they shit the bed too many games.

Putting the kid back there will either get him hurt or shell shocked. He hasnt the experience to deal with this lousy O line play. I dont know how they can fix it without breaking it up. Some of those guys need to go. I dont care about cap hits, this group is fractured, and they cant fix it without some of them shown the door

It might be easier to pick the ones to keep

I'd get rid of Ryan Kelly first, but that would leave an even bigger mess. I think you're right about it needing blown up, but I have no idea how they'd go about doing it. This off-season is gonna be a doozy.
This team does not need to be blown up. Thats just dumb.
We have one of the best defenses in the NFL while missing the best player on D and also missing Paye for quite a few games.
We have one of the best RB's in the NFL that had injures that hindered him
We have some up and coming receivers in Pittman and Pierce along with Campbell playing like he is capable. (hope he is resigned)
We need a QB a RG and an Oline coach along with a legit OC. But we also need some superstars at other positions
Look for the best player possible with the 1st pick in the draft. No matter the position. And look for a QB through FA and the draft. But not force the 1st pick to be QB.
I am on board with Rainmann. He will develop. I'd look at DE WR or secondary
I'd be OK with Saturday .... whatever .... but he needs to get a real offensive mind in here to call plays.
1st decision I would make in the offseason is HC. then let him fire the Oline coach and bring in his own guy. Leave Gus alone He is making things happen.

LT, LG, Smith on the right some where, Pinter (not sure about as starter). Off the top of my head. Cant dump all of them, thats crazy.

Even more than players the team need a new mental approach, they are losers mentally right now. Saturday may have helped a little but we need completely new direction from a mental standpoint.

i don't think we will force a qb pick this year. i think there is a good chance one of the top 3 will fall.
will it be the right one? who knows.
right now i like Levis the best. based on skill set and mostly because Manning said something nice about him. something like "he will be playing on Sundays" or something like that.
Richardson is a scary pick for bust factor but if he hit, that could be awesome

They're current mental approach/direction is...none. Same as the level of leadership on that team: Nada.

I agree totally. I forget Polian's mantra on drafting a 1st round QB, but a couple of criteria were at least a 60% completion % over his career and at least a 3 year starter. We rarely have 3 year starters anymore, so I'm sure he revised that to 2 years.
Richardson doesn't even come close to fulfilling those criteria.

Levis is easily over the 60% completion % threshold, but his TD/Int ratio is pretty lackluster.

They don't.
Unless one thinks that Nick Foles and/or Sam Ehlinger are the franchise quarterback of the future, they don't need snaps.
If Foles and/or Ehlinger are not going to be "the guy" as were Jim Harbaugh, Peyton Manning and Andrew Luck, they don't need snaps.
Additionally, as I pointed out earlier, the atrocious offensive line is the elephant in the room, not who the starting quarterback is going to be for the final 4 games of the season for a team that has a record of 4-8-1.

Because they get very few in the season.
Especially at QB. Especially when the starting QB is a fucking fossil who absolutely sucks under pressure, and especially when this fossil has to play behind the an OL that completely sucks.

Who cares about that? At least it's something different. Unless one just likes watching Matt Ryan get sacked, throw a pick, get sacked, fumble the ball, throw a pick, be worthless, etc etc
Is the OL awful? Absolutely, those clowns are or there stealing money. But why play by far the worst option with an OL that's that trash?

Who cares about "something different" when something different won't matter ??? We have already seen what Sam Ehlinger can do behind that offensive line in the game against the Patriots ...... nothing that Ryan can't do himself, which is get beaten up, not sustain any kind of long drives, and suffer through the losses. Touting a change at quarterback at quarterback at this point would be nothing more than rearranging the decks for The Titanic.
Unless the Titans completely collapse and the Colts miraculously run the table and go undefeated in their final 4 games, the season is over ...... insisting on changing quarterbacks is futile. For myself, I've accepted the fact that since Matt Ryan, Sam Ehlinger, and Nick Foles taking snaps behind that atrocious offensive line are not Randall Cunningham, Michael Vick, or Fran Tarkenton, things won't get better until that offensive line finds a way to revert back to the way that they were playing in 2020 and 2021.
If the Colts somehow manage to go 4-0 over their final 4 games and salvage a .500 season, it won't be because of Matt Ryan, Sam Ehlinger, or Nick Foles ...... it will be because the offensive line actually starts blocking at a competent level.
o

The money wont matter to Irsay. If it did, ryan would not be starting. The way the economy is going, Fans should be worrying about their own money, Irsay has more than enough to run the team

No one is worried about how Irsay spends him money. The concern is that if the unguaranteed portion of Ryan's salary goes to him then that $17M becomes a complete waste of 8% of next year's salary cap. I think we'd all like to see if put to better use like fixing the OL or adding some pass rush.

Again, they will move money around, its monopoly money. Its not a hard cap.

While that's somewhat true and there are ways to get around it, it's still better for the Colts to not eat an additional $17M in cap space.
Also, we all know that Ballard doesn't play that game. He keeps the Colts under the cap (sometimes well under the cap) and doesn't push cap hits out to future years.

Maybe they plan on hiring Sam Bankman-Fried to fix the cap, I hear he is available, but may have an offer from US Justice that he cant turn down..
