View Full Version : Ryan not seeing WR's

JMV had Kravitz on. BOTH said that there's a real concern with Ryan not seeing WR's. They both said that sitting in the press boxes there have been multiple times when he has not thrown to WIDE OPEN players.

There was an acknowledgement that he is often under duress but they said he is not releasing the ball to open receivers for whatever reason. Kravitz in particular was very critical saying that he is shocked at not only his inability to spot the open man but his lack of pocket awareness. He went so far as to flatly state that he hopes this is a one and done deal.

Damn!

Which really really really brings one to a critical question- what is the cause?

This O-line was at one point, quite good. Dominating in the run game and adequate in pass blocking- the Rivers year, he didn't get hit a lot and was quite successful passing the ball, so much so that it was kind of a given that he was gonna come back for what was thought to be a team with a real chance.

Last year, they weren't great but they weren't terrible. Obviously JT went off like a bomb and Wentz seemed to hold the ball so damn long that at times they seemed to be leaky but it was easy to blame him for not releasing in phase.

This year, they are straight dog shit! Now they can't even run block.

What the fuck is the problem- I mean they look fucking lost out there. Why would Strausser just all the sudden suck at coaching these guys this badly?

Just don't fucking get it!

When you start a RG at LT, your OL doesn't look elite anymore. Shift Pryor to RG where he belongs and start Raimann at LT. OL will straighten itself out.

Gonna make Q be Q again? Gonna make Smith look like he has a clue how to be a tackle again?

Nah man, something else is fucked up here beyond Pryor just not being acceptable at LT.

I do think there is something to what Dam is saying. It has to be a factor. You have 2 guys who shouldn’t be playing where they are playing.

That’s on Ballards dumb ass.

Ballard finds and signs them the coaches choose who plays where last I understood things.

Ballard handed the starting LT job to Pryor when he re-signed him and let Fisher walk.

Unfortunately you're right. He finally settled down a bit in the 2nd half, but for most of the game yesterday Ryan looked like he was in panic mode on every single drop back.

LT is the lynchpin of this line. Whenever Castonzo was out the line would struggle. The LT play has regressed and the line has regressed as a result. If LT is solid, it goes through Q to the center. Those three positions solidify. Then it is usually RG that is meh or the weakest link. Not sure why Ballard takes so long to address it. He waits for the perfect draft pick.

He is getting hit too much. He was getting hit trying to do play action. They keep getting destroyed by stunts.

You understand correctly but Reich can’t play the competent left tackle that Ballard didn’t sign.

It is both of their faults. They both own this debacle.

If this early in the season it is obvious that the 3rd round rookie LT who has only played the position for two years and has been injured missing games and practice time is your best option at LT then the GM fucked up. Let’s put the blame where it lies.

What LTs, rookie or free agents were signed and now playing that Ballard should have gotten?

in 2020, a 38 year-old Philip Rivers had a solid season, leading the Colts to an 11-6 season, a playoff berth, and taking an excellent Buffalo Bills team right down to the wire on their homefield in that post-season.

Rivers, who had the mobility of an inanimate object such as a wooden chair, had a solid offensive line in front of him ...... if Rivers had had THIS CURRENT offensive line blocking for him, I suspect that he may not have been able to lead that 2020 team to a 6-11 season, let alone an 11-6 season.

As I stated in another thread last week, a quarterback can only have so much "pocket presence" when the other team's players are in his face 2 or 3 seconds after the ball is snapped.

Where is Ryan's pocket presence ??? Well, a QB can only have so much "pocket presence" when he is playing behind an offensive line that is performing like that of a Division I-AA college team ...... yet despite that, Ryan somehow managed to go 27-for-37 for 222 yards, 2 TD's, 0 INT's, which was good for a 105.9 QB rating. If we can somehow get our offensive line to improve from awful to average, we just may start seeing the Matt Ryan that had so many excellent seasons when he was playing for the Falcons. The return of Michael Pittman Jr, who missed last week's game against the Jaguars with a quadricep injury, evidently made a significant difference also.

Looks like he's not, which is pretty interesting. Ballard should give him a call to see if he wants to come in for a workout. Unless he's let himself go he'd be better than Pryor, and it would allow Pryor to move to RG.

I know you were asking someone else, but I'll chime in.

He could have drafted Darrisaw in '21, brought in Leno in '21 and extended him, or he could have re-signed Fisher. All would have been better options at LT than handing it over to a backup swing OL who's not capable of blocking speed rushers.

In addition how much of a disaster was letting Glow and Reed both walk and handing Pinter the starting RG job? Unless he's completely incompetent Strausser must have seen that Pinter isn't strong enough to play OG in the NFL. Why the hell wouldn't he clue the FO in on this??

Ryan saw his receivers fine yesterday, now that somebody gave the offensive line the memo that they weren't playing in the Pro Bowl exhibition game.

Ryan again saw his receivers fine today, as it was a rare game in which he had solid blocking.

His 39-yard run on 3rd-and-3 late in the 4th quarter with the Colts needing to score was great to see.

By the way, the Colts are now 4-3-1 in games in which Ryan has played ...... that's bordering on a proverbial Houdini act, considering the play of the offensive line for most of those games.
