INDIANAPOLIS — The news first came from a former teammate.

Tennessee left tackle Taylor Lewan is on the level.

The Colts are signing veteran swing tackle Dennis Kelly, a source confirmed to IndyStar on Tuesday, adding experienced depth to an offensive line that lost a lot of veteran savvy in the offseason.

Kelly, 32, visited Indianapolis the day before the first round of the NFL Draft. Though the Colts drafted a potential left tackle in Central Michigan’s Bernhard Raimann in the third round two days later, they had room for an offensive tackle who’s made 51 starts in 10 seasons in the NFL, including a full season at right tackle for the Titans in 2020.

The Colts have spent a lot of time watching Kelly work.

Kelly, who played at Purdue, was a member of the rival Titans for five seasons, then spent last year in Green Bay after the Packers scooped him up in free agency. Kelly started the final four games of the season and the playoff game for Green Bay.

Kelly’s signing also underscores a point Colts general manager Chris Ballard has been hammering home over the past couple of weeks.

The work of building the Indianapolis roster is far from over.

“Between now, and I always say, the start of the season, into October, you’re going to find an answer to help you win,” Ballard said.
