With No. 73, the Colts take TE Jelani Woods (Virginia).

Woods is one of the most athletic tight ends you’ll find.

2 picks. 2 pass catchers.

Jack Doyle and Mo Alie-Cox have combined for more than 1,100 snaps in each of the last 3 seasons. With Doyle gone, Alie-Cox wasn’t going to be able to take all of those snaps.

Enter Woods.

OC Marcus Brady coached him at the Shrine Bowl and the Colts had been interested in him ever since.

Jelani Woods was drafted with pick 73 of round 3 in the 2022 draft class.

He scored a 10 RAS out of a possible 10.00.

This ranked 1 out of 1014 TE from 1987 to 2022.

Colts third-round pick Jelani Woods, explaining how he switched from QB to TE while at Oklahoma St....

He was asked once to play Mark Andrews on the scout team and "pretty much killed our starting defense."

Coaches asked him to switch to TE the next day.

After watching his tape, I'm surprised he was ranked as low as he was. I don't want to say who my comp was yet, but watch film of him and see if you can guess, because it's pretty obvious.

Antonio Gates?

More recent. Gates wasn't as physical. Size match is uncanny.

Gronk???

That's the one. Play style is nearly identical. Woods seeks out contact, whether he's run blocking or just made a reception. He's already a quality run blocker, and as a pass catcher, he's a matchup nightmare everywhere on the field but especially in the redzone where UVA would split him out wide and throw either a fade or a slant for an easy TD or DPI flag. The Illinois tape is the one where it's the most blatantly obvious. He ran over their entire secondary in that game.

Dam I've never wanted you to be more correct than this comp.

Watch the Illinois tape and try to stop yourself from thinking "That's Gronk". I couldn't.

That's funny. I saw that Illinois film and thought Jimmy Graham based on his routes. But he was definitely trucking guys like Gronk, too. Here's a few routes and a pass-pro with different angles. I liked 3:10 in particular.

I want to see more on his blocking. Anybody seen a good vid?

He moves better than Cox, more fluid. One of these TE’s we drafted needs to work out. Lots of pressure on the coaching staff with this draft. No finished products.

It will be interesting to see but my guess is that the Colts don't budge on letting someone new use a HOFer's number. Marvin should be safe.

Yeah he may have to be 89.

It is so dumb to "retire" numbers in a game where teams have 53 +players and only 99 numbers to use.

John Mackey wore #88 prior to Marvin...

This can't be a team rule, right? Edgerrin James got elected to the Hall of Fame in January or February of 2020. Then we drafted Julian Blackmon in April of 2020. Blackmon continues to wear Edge's #32.
