View Full Version : Carson Wentz feels “new passion for the game
https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2021/06/30/carson-wentz-feels-new-passion-for-the-game-in-indianapolis/
Carson Wentz‘s struggles with the Eagles during the 2020 season have been well documented and this offseason has been about trying to turn the page to a brighter future.
Wentz was traded to the Colts to kick off the offseason and he’s spent the last few months getting used to life with his new team. During a recent visit to Fargo, North Dakota for work with his foundation, Wentz spoke to Beth Hoole of ValleyNewsLive.com and said that he thinks Indianapolis is “definitely a special place” that has rejuvenated him after a rough year in Philadelphia.
“I really feel like I have a new passion for the game,” Wentz said, via Jonathan X. Simmons of the Indianapolis Star. “I’ve been high, I’ve been injured, I’ve been, now, benched, I’ve been traded, I’ve kinda seen a lot in five years, so whatever the game throws at me I’m ready.”
The Colts are betting that Wentz is both ready for whatever’s thrown his way and able to handle it better than he did last season. The success of that bet and the success of their season will go hand in hand.

Carson Wentz working out with teammates in Texas

Colts quarterback Carson Wentz makes his offseason home in Texas, so he invited some of his new teammates to work with him there before training camp.
Receiver Mike Strachan posted photos on Instagram.
Backup quarterback Jacob Eason, receivers Michael Pittman Jr., Dezmon Patmon, Parris Campbell and Zach Pascal and tight ends Mo Alie-Cox and Kylen Granson were spotted in photos along with Wentz and Strachan, via Charlie Clifford of WISH.
A year ago, Wentz had the Eagles’ skill position players working with him at the same high school field in the Houston area.
The Eagles traded Wentz to the Colts this offseason, and the quarterback recently said he feels “a new passion for the game” in Indianapolis.

All positive signs, now lets do it in real games. Looking forward to seeing how this team develops.

I've noticed that a lot of good QBs take a big step forward in their 5th year. Wentz has had some bumps along the way though, continuity over those 5 years helps. So here's hoping its a 6th year bump for him.

Wentz made 2 really bad decisions tonight, one of which he paid for with an INT, and one in which he was fortunate that the 49ers defender dropped the ball that was right in his hands ...... but overall, I thought that he showed lots of ability, improvisation, grit, and determination.
I think that we ought to forget about him not playing in games and/or taking fewer snaps because of the draft pick ...... as far as I'm concerned, we're all in with him, for better or for worse.

I say the second one was a bad decision. But the first one was because it slipped out of his hands. You can say that was a bad decision to try, but Pascal was wide open.

At one time, I think back in the '90s, they actually held court in the stadium, complete with a judge, to convict some of their idiotic fan base. They've since stopped that practice but it shows how brutal they can be.

That one eventually got re-interpreted as a fumble, so it doesn't count to his INT stats. (not that such matters)
Stats aside, he was trying to throw it, and he threw it to the wrong guy. This Is his decision making... It's raining, it cost us at least 3 points.

Although Wentz has made a couple questionable decisions in this short season so far. He is not the reason we are 3-4 and has actually exceeded my expectations and I think he gets better as the season progresses. I think he knows deep down the Colts are his last chance in the league to prove he belongs.

Without Wentz we are 0-7 maybe 1-6. He has been all we could have hoped for. He keeps getting better each game. He has great mobility but I hate that he doesn't slide when he scrambles. He isn't a turn over machine and does not play hero ball with us. Well worth a number one.

I am happy we got wentz and I believe overall we will do well with him at QB. However, I think we will also have to accept that he will make some bonehead plays trying to make something happen. I guess this is the hero ball that we hear so much about in regards to his play.

So now it's pretty much guaranteed the pick will go to the Eagles, and if the Colts take care of business, it will most likely be a 21st pick or so (currently it's the 23rd if the season ended today and if the Colts lost their Wild Card game).
Great trade now. I have issues with Wentz, but he's been worth a 23rd pick, and I have faith he'll get better after another year or two in the system.

It is guaranteed. If he doesn’t play another snap, he’d still have over 80 percent of the snaps.

With the Colts defense and their run game, Wentz doesn't have to be Peyton Manning, he just needs to be better than average and not be a turnover machine. No way the Colts could have drafted a QB that would have been better than Wentz in this upcoming draft....and with Wentz you also get experience. I still think the price was too high, but maybe that was the only way they could get him? I think the Colts are a championship calibre team and will be for years to come!

Colts will have too many important players out with coronavirus for the Arizona game. Cardinals will stack the box all day and force Wentz to beat them in the air. He won't be able to do it.

Wentz did indeed shake off last week's bad game ...... particularly considering the fact that he was working with an offensive line put together with some plywood and crazy glue.

Talk about the football gods giving us some love. Unvaccinated Wentz gets COVID at the exact right time to miss zero games and be essentially cleared of COVID worries (as far as protocols etc go) for the entire playoffs. The whole offensive line is practically in the same boat as is Leonard, Rock and Rhodes. We are set up for a playoff run. Now we just gotta get in.

This article is not necessarily my opinion. I'm just putting it out there because I came across it.
That said, I'm looking at it from the other side ...... when Carson Wentz hurt both of his ankles late in the 4th quarter of the Colts' very close loss to the Rams, they were trailing by only 3 points. Jacob Eason came in with a little over 2 minutes left to play, and a chance to lead the offense to either a game-tying field goal or a game-winning touchdown. After thrown an incomplete pass on the first play from scrimmage, Eason threw an INT to end the Colts' chances for a win.
The next week, a severely-hobbled Carson Wentz gutted out a game against the Titans in a losing effort. At the time, many Colts fans felt that they would rather have Carson Wentz playing in a wheelchair than have either Jacob Eason or Sam Ehlinger take the snaps from the center ...... so Wentz may not have had the season that many Colts fans were hoping that he would have, but there is also a LOOOOONG gap between him and whomever we have lined up next. And yes, I suppose one could argue that Chris Ballard should have done a better job at finding better back-up quarterbacks than Eason and/or Ehlinger, but there really aren't a hell of a lot of them (good back-up QB's) throughout the league ...... perhaps he could have made an effort to acquire Case Keenum, but I don't think that the Raiders were going to just let us have Marcus Mariota. And I'm not sure that anyone could have foreseen Taylor Heinicke coming in and doing the very respectable job that he has done for the Redskins in place of the injured Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Not sure how good or bad our backup quarterback situation is. The Colts seem to love Ehlinger and who knows how he would play. Having said that Wentz is our starting QB and I am convinced we can win with him, just not because of him (like a whole lot of other freaks). I he holding us back? Compared to who? Compared to the top tier of QBs sure, but Ballard has stated how he wants to build a team approach and doesn't need a Manning or Rogers to win. We had Manning/Luck for 20 combined years and have one Super Bowl to show for it. Having a dominant QB doesn't guarantee anything. We are a WR and a pass rush away.

Interesting article, but the author just brushes off the suggestion that we need better WRs and a more consistent lineup on the line. Those are a factor, and until we see improvement there, we can't fully assess the QB. The biggest issue with Wentz is the overthrows, followed by holding onto the ball too long.
