Tom Pelissero @TomPelissero

The #Colts are signing former #Chargers left tackle Sam Tevi, per source. A chance to protect Carson Wentz’s blindside.

Sam Tevi was an unmitigated disaster for the LA Chargers in 2020. Not the type of year a player envisions having going into their free agency. In Tevi’s contract year he earned one of the worst grades, according to Pro Football Focus (PFF), with a 52.9.

That wasn’t even his worst season. That honor goes to his second year in the league. So, he’ll have a lot of suitors out there, *insert eye roll emoji*.

Appears so, even Green was rated higher than Tevi ??? Guy is a human turn-style at OT. Carson going get killed...

Looks like a win - win to me. If he works out CB is a genius. If he doesn’t, then he was cheap and CB maintained a great cap situation - so CB is a genius.

Ballard wants to be frugal and picky then ok. But signing shit players isnt part of that deal. Irritates me.

The Colts need bodies, this guy could be depth. Move Smith to LT and finding a RT in the draft is possible.

They shouldn’t be signing “bodies” at this point. Especially with the major holes they have and the ability to fill them.

To be fair, Zach Keefer is suggesting that there is another OL move that may be coming. If they go in to the season with Tevi and a rookie battling to start at LT I’ll be pissed. If Tevi is just extra depth then sure - he at least has experience.

Ballard is shopping at the 99 cent store, while others are at the higher end stores. I understand being frugal to a point, but when you have glaring needs, at least address one or two with proven players, not this kind of fodder.

I don't understand this hoarding the cap money bullshit.

Agreed. Everyone's acting like this guy is slotted in as the starter, when it's much more likely he's just a low end backup. Obviously, the Colts see something about this guy's skill set they like and think they can develop. If it turns out they can't, then I'm sure they'll cut him. No harm, no foul.

Now, if they paid a bunch of money for this guy and he craters, then by all means flame away. Until then, I don't really see the reason for all of the anguish.

This is clearly a depth signing which is a necessary part of building a team, but from everything I have seen/read he is fucking terrible. As in, really we cant do any better!?

I understand it to a point, I think ballard has taken it a bit far. He built the core in this fashion which he has done a nice job of doing. Trading for and extending bucker was great.

This year I wanted one impact player, some solid vets, and then draft. Given the lower cap that caused teams issues, our cap space, we should have been able to improve the team, even if in the short term. I would be fine and was expecting some 1-2 year contracts.

Impact at DE - lawson or similar. We could have afforded that type of contract.
Vets - villaneuva to compete with drafted LT or be solid backup and teach rookie the ropes. Resign rhodes (done). Wait for Ertz to be released (hopefully still happens). Sign a solid WR.

Draft.

It depends on what level of “depth” he is. As a former starter he’s probably pretty decent as a 3rd string LT. Any higher depth than that and I think it’s a shit signing.

Ballard is building the team. Relax freaks. Back ups have issues, otherwise they would not be back ups.

Apparently we'll be taking a step back this coming season. QB has been addressed (hopefully), but nothing else has. We've lost more than we've gained, and dime store guys and drafted rookies won't be enough to fill out the roster at a winning level. First time I've been disappointed with Ballard and company. I'm not angry, just whatever.

You can build your core through the draft and supplement with FA. If you look at the four remaining teams in the playoffs. They all got their passrush through FA. It’s hard to find pass rushers in the draft. No shame in paying for them in FA. But from the moves so far, it looks like we are going to be forced to go LT and passrush with our top two picks. LT I can understand, we need a rookie contract on the line. But depending on a rookie for passrush is not going to improve the teams pass rush in the short term.

Still, we have some more FA to go and moves can still be made. Just will be disappointing if we go into another season and the position is still a weakness.

Agreed. People freak out every year but this has always been Ballards MO.

Theoretically, sitting out free agency to this degree means we get to keep more of our own really good players.

IE, if we sign Thuney this year, we may not be able to afford Smith next year.

There are at least 3 Colts who will have contracts to deal with on the horizon. Nelson, Leonard, and Smith. And there are several others I’m sure he would like to keep. And from his own words, he wont low ball them or ask for a hometown discount.

He likes to pay HIS guys, not mercenaries who stay for a couple years and then leave. He traded for Bruckner, then paid him for his skills. Bruckner is COMMITTED to this team.

He doesnt hand out big money to strangers. He pays guys who show their worth.

I’d add Hines as a guy we need to try and resign.

Tevi's contract terms:

Sam Tevi (Colts) one year, $2.51M base value, $3.1M max value, $1M gtd, $500K signing bonus, salary $1.5M ($500K gtd); up to $510K per game active roster bonus, $1M playtime incentive

500k per game is a lot higher than 3.1M. Maybe they are saying the total is 510k?

Yes, that is how I interpret it. The bonus for being Active in each game is likely to be just shy of $20K. If Tevi is Active in every single possible game, then he could potentially earn up to $510K.

Active Roster Bonus: Expecting a 17 game season $30K per x 17 = $510K

FWIW, Sportrac currently indicates the per game bonus is $18,750. That figure suggests that Tevi may be getting a bonus for post season games, too. Not to say that Sportrac is always right. Sportrac will continue to search for more details about contracts and will update the information if they find another source that they deem to be more reliable.

Back on subject. I like the Tevi signing. I'm hoping he doesn't start, but depth is so important. He's played both RT and LT, so that makes him a flexible sub and it's a long season, all of your starters will miss a game or two, hopefully not more than that, but you need depth.

Based on Tevi's camp and preseason performance, I thought it was unlikely that he would make the Colts 53 man roster.

However, he will not play for anyone this year - according to Mike Wells, he tore his ACL in the last preseason game.

Injuries keep happening for Colts, as OT Sam Tevi is out with a torn ACL, according to source.

I really hope that he wouldn't have made the team, sans IR.

I remember the Grigson/Pagano days, where if a guy was abject awful that we'd see their injury as being a blessing of "saving ourselves from ourselves."

Gotta hope that Ballard/Reich wouldn't have still trotted him out there. Davenport has supposedly won the job (in Fisher's absence). As long as Davenport in fact does start then I will assume that he would've beaten out Tevi as well.

Yeah, as I wrote earlier, I don't think Tevi would have made the Colts 53 man roster. I think Davenport and Holden were both ahead of him on the tackle depth chart.
